Cabin Fever

Guess what?  It’s snowing!  Shocking, right?  It’s basically been snowing non stop since we got back to Meadville.  So I’ve been a little stuck inside.  See, since I don’t have a job (grrr), it makes more sense for Solomon to take my car, which has 4 wheel drive.  His car is fine, but I’m not so comfortable with how it handles in the snow, so except for emergencies, I really don’t want to be driving it.  Therefore, I’m a little bit stuck at home.  I mean, I’ve gotten out some-a little grocery store action, happy hour (hi YAPs!), but mostly, it’s been me and Rufio chilling.  There’s plenty to keep us entertained though, so it’s been OK.

I have used some of this time to try out some new recipes (I’ll be telling you all about my sourdough bread later this week :) ), and some new products that I thought were blogworthy.

Check out this drink my mom found me in Wegman’s.

Pina colada Quinoa Gold quinoa drink.  We all know how much quinoa rocks, not only as a grain chock full of protein, but also for it’s antioxidant and nutritional properties.  Did we know it was drinkable?  I for one had no idea.  This drink is caffeine and gluten free and is considered a complete protein.  It was…interesting.  The fact that there was a lot of texture to my drink didn’t bother me at all, I just wasn’t totally in love with the flavor.  It was just OK.  Maybe I would like the Mango Passion or Dark Berry better?  Truthfully, I didn’t drink nearly enough of it to notice if it had any impact on how I felt, but I’d be willing to give it another shot.  Have you tried Quinoa Gold?

Next on my list of fun things to try was Naturally More Almond Butter.  I’ve been a fan of the peanut butter for quite some time.  It’s packed with protein and fiber, and the nutritional stats are really impressive.  I wrote to them asking about their almond butter and Tim offered to send me a jar to sample.  DSC04011 DSC04012

I decided to try it on my favorite snack, a granny smith apple (by the way, does anyone else find apple eating to be exhausting sometimes?  They take me forever and really take a whole lot out of me?  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  Bueller? I know someone knows what I’m talking about!). 

I wouldn’t necessarily call this love at first bite, but definitely like.  The texture threw me off a little (I’m such a texture eater).  It wasn’t quite creamy and it wasn’t quite chunky like I would expect a nut butter to be.  There were whole flaxseeds in it that I could taste and feel.  I guess this was the case too in the peanut butter, but for some reason it wasn’t as noticeable.  The flavor was really yummy though, just right, and perfect for an apple.  Plus, this snack held me over until dinner, so that’s always a bonus!  I think, at the end of the day, my heart belongs to Naturally More peanut butter, rather than almond butter.  Thank you Naturally More and Time!

Finally, while getting out of the house yesterday (yay!), Solomon and I tried an Element Bar that I had received to sample.  Usually, half a bar isn’t enough to tide me over after a big morning workout and a light lunch, but this one totally did the trick.

It was so full of flavor, and huge pieces of fruit (apricots and cranberries) which was a big plus to me!  The Crispy Cranberry bar was made of brown rice syrup, peanut butter, soy flour, organic apricots, cranberries, organic soy nuts, organic crispy rice and sea salt.  It had a nice bite to it, and the texture wasn’t fake like a lot of bars are.  It was incredibly filling, which is surprising for some bars, and had great nutritional stats.

Solomon is INCREDIBLY picky about bars (he has a lot of food allergies) and fell in love with this one.  He kept saying how good it was all afternoon-definitely a winner in my book!  Thank you Element Bar!

In other fun news, we found some things that had me dancing in the aisles of Costco.  For real.  Yes, that was our big day out-Costco (and Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Ethiopian Food for dinner…can you say foodies?).  I’ve searched high and low through the frozen tundra that is northwestern PA, and haven’t been able to find Chobani anywhere.

Yes my friends, Chobani.  Ridiculous amounts of it.  I couldn’t resist, so I bought two.

We figured it was worth buying a second one to freeze, just in case.  YAY!

Also at Costco…

Giant jar o’ Maranatha?  Yes please!  This huge jar cost less than a normal sized jar does at Whole Foods.  Why I didn’t buy a whole case is beyond me.  Imagine the OIAJ I can make when I’m done with this baby!

Finally, to end up this post of randonmess, a big thank you to the amazing Julie.  I won her Tomato Mountain Giveaway and had this lovely jars waiting for me on my doorstep.

Time to peace out on this totally illogical, all over the place post.  The Pats are playing today and I have a lot ahead of me to do in the kitchen!
