Brooklyn Adventures and Luke’s Lobsters

Posted Jul 24 2010 6:06pm

Today has been a great day in so many ways. I had the opportunity to spend time with a great friend while completing a long run. Bo and I spent the afternoon together in a relaxed manner that really reminded us why we love each other. We make each other laugh more than I could have ever imagined. Finally, we relaxed at home enjoying one of our favorite dinners together.  I love wonderfully active Saturdays that end in pure relaxation.

This morning when my alarm went off I was still exhausted. Why did I stay up late watching 30 Rock when I could have been getting precious hours of beauty sleep? I started to get dressed and then remembered that I’d have to wear my Lululemon crop pants and a technical t-shirt instead of my lightweight Nike tempo shorts I bought last weekend in Atlanta and my Lululemon tank. Unfortunately, without thinking I put these in our dirty clothes pile so they were in the wash.

After filling up my CamelBak and eating toast with sunflower seed butter and a few frozen banana pieces I headed out for the Union Square subway station to meet Theodora and Rebecca in Brooklyn for our 8 mile run. Twenty five minutes later I arrived in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately Theodora wasn’t with me as she had subway issues this morning. It was already 86 degrees with 85% humidity at 7:30am! Rebecca and I knew this was going to be a hot, sticky run.  I was especially excited for this run as I have only been to Brooklyn for the Brooklyn Half in 2009 and 2010. Therefore, my familiarity with Brooklyn ends at Prospect Park. My tour guide and running buddy, Rebecca, found a great path for us on Map My Run ahead of time. The route we ended up running was approximately 7 miles as we stopped short of 8 due to the heat and me. This was the farthest I’ve run since the Brooklyn Half marathon at the end of May. Over the past two weeks I’ve gone from 0 miles to doing 7 miles for my long run. I was hoping for 8 but at the end of the day was proud of the seven. Next weekend we’ll conquer 8 and include a bridge! What is your #1 hot weather running tip when doing a long run?

I love running with my camera! Capturing the sights and sounds of a run is a fun way to mix it up at stop lights and water/bathroom breaks.

I had no idea that Brooklyn had a botanical garden, museum, and so much character. We ran through Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Red Hook, and more!

Our route weaved through brownstone neighborhoods, tree lined streets, and then under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway into a very industrial area. We caught some great views of Manhattan and our mouth watered when we passed Blue Point Brewing Company.

Luckily the folks at this little bagel shop were very friendly and let us use their bathroom and accepted two of the sweatiest dollars ever in exchange for two much needed bottles of COLD water. My Camel Bak did a great job hydrating me but the water got hot quickly.

How do you tempt two gals into stopping their run a mile early. Combine heat and humidity with a delicious juice truck!

I don’t enjoy juices nearly often enough but Rebecca is a pro and recommended two delicious juices. One was filled with cool lemon lime freshness while the other was beets, cucumbers, and more.

We cooled down with our juices and my new friend Elvis.

Unfortunately, a nap was not in my future. After a quick shower, Bo and I headed out to run errands. Our check list didn’t have a chance:

-return dress to White House Black Market

-return dress to Nordstrom Rack

-return extra cables to Best Buy

-buy a hostess/thank you gift for Amy (I’ll be staying with her in Cincinnati all week)

-pick up framed picture Kat gave us

-fill my prescription

-taste the best Lobster Roll in the city

We were able to accomplish everything in two hours! We were drenched in sweat once we returned home. But, our taste buds weren’t disappointed.

Luke’s Lobster Shack

Bo read a great lobster roll review on Bloomberg this week and immediately had a craving. I promised him we could check out Luke’s for lunch on Saturday. Located in the East Village this little nook was jam packed with patrons and unfortunately without AC. It was roasting in there but no one was complaining because it smelled delicious! The atmosphere screamed Maine!

Once home, we couldn’t wait to dig in. We each ordered a lobster roll with empress claws.

Blog Pictures 2010 555 OMG! This was the best lobster roll I’ve ever had. It was a perfect mix of lobster meat, sweet buttery Texas toast, and VERY little mayonnaise. The only flavor was the salty, fresh lobster.

Upper East Side: 242 E. 81st Street, New York, NY 212.249.4241

and last but not least, have you seen the new Healthy, Happier Bear ? Thanks to Josh at JOGO the site is looking better than ever and I have a brand new header and look. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
