BMO Marathon Weekend: Friday

Posted May 06 2013 5:57pm
Wow what an incredible weekend this turned out to be!  It is really a testament to how awesome our running community is when you see so many great people come together for an event like this and get to share in the fun, excitement and shared enthusiasm.

The weekend began for me on Friday when I had the opportunity to volunteer at one of the weekend's official events.  A couple months back when Solana was telling me about volunteering at BMO last year and it sounded like fun so I kind of invited myself along.  Sure enough, I was able to tag along with Solana and her mom and we helped out at the Elite Runner and VIP Lunch on Friday afternoon.

I only got to speak with him for a minute but he really seemed like a nice guy and I thought it was just priceless that he wanted to make sure he had a picture on his phone too.  I guess that's why he's so successful in his role, he's great at getting out and meeting people!

The panel discussion included a host of amazing athletes including the top half marathon and marathon contenders from Kenya, Sun Run and BMO Half Marathon winner Natasha Fraser, Canadian Olympian Dylan Wykes and several others.

The discussion was really interesting and I got a kick out of Dylan's response when he was asked what advice he had for people during the last 10km of the marathon course.  He said, "It's going to be hard so just embrace the pain. Oh and maybe the mountains will help."  I was hoping for something a bit more inspirational but reference to the beautiful views along the course was entertaining at least!

Afterwards we snapped a shot with our snazzy credentials...

Since my running journey post-accident began and continues at the Running Room, I kind of credit John Stanton (the store's founder) for the success I've found in running.  I'm not fast or any kind of contender but I was told I'd never be able to run again but by embracing the Running Room's interval style of run-walk training, I've not only been able to run but I've run and achieved so many more things than I ever thought possible.  It was nice to get a chance for a quick hello and to thank him and his programs for getting me to where I am today.

I also couldn't help but check out the marathon medals that were displayed at one of the booths...
