Birthday Gifts!

Posted Jul 27 2011 10:39am

Today is my birthday!  Have I mentioned that?  I think I did.

Today was also my rest day, so no fitness activity for me.  I do plan to make Fridays an easy strength training workout day, probably just upper body because Saturday mornings are my long runs.  Tomorrow is 4 miles.  I know that doesn’t seem very long for a long run, but it’s the second week of training.  I haven’t run 4 miles since last fall when I could actually run 10 miles, which is why I plan to join a slow pace group.

I have talked about how we have a Vitamix blender at work.  Today my boss called me into his office and handed me a huge box.  With the word “VITAMIX” printed all over it.  I was confused.  He told me it was my birthday gift.  A Vitamix blender!!!!!  I can’t believe it.  I’m still in shock about this.  My very own Vitamix blender!!!!

But let’s back up.  When I got to work my wonderful co-worker had bought me a birthday pie.  She put candles in it and sang “Happy Birthday” and I blew out the candles.  She said she was going to get me cake, but she didn’t think I would eat it, and she thought pie was much healthier.  Isn’t that so sweet?

What did I have for breakfast?  Two slices of Ezekial bread with one tablespoon of peanut butter and a cut up banana.  I was afraid this wouldn’t fill me up, but I ate at about 10:00am and wasn’t hungry again until 1:00pm.  Three hours is great.

For lunch I had my basic turkey sandwich, and sugar snap peas with hummus.

Mid-afternoon I had a new snack.  My other boss gave me a package of these crispbreads that she orders online.

Each cracker has 12 calories and 5 grams of fiber.  That is amazing.  And look at the ingredients:  unprocessed wheat bran, rye flour, salt.  That’s it!  I had two of these in the afternoon and I was quite full.  By the way I recommend you drink a lot of water while eating these, unless you want to have an esophogeal blockage.  They are somewhat dry and hard to swallow, but the taste isn’t bad.  It is recommended to have 25 grams of fiber per day, and this is a good way to do that.

When I got home from work this was waiting for me:

Pretty gift bag, let’s see what is inside:

A gift certificate to Potomac River Running !  (This is exactly what I asked for.)  Love to shop at the running store, especially with a gift certificate.

Then I unpacked the Vitamix.  Look at all of the parts, and the pamphlets and the huge cookbook full of recipes.  Wow.

Here it is on my counter.  This is the tall container, and some people don’t like it because it doesn’t fit under the cabinets, but part of my counter doesn’t have a cabinet above it, so it is perfect!

Here it is on appliance row:

And here is Mr. Old Blender, who is now retiring.  He wasn’t a great blender, but he did a fair job, and he was cheap.  I can’t complain too much about him, but I sure do like Mr. New Blender better!
