Bird’s fitness: a return to running

Posted Jul 13 2010 8:01am

Today I’m just plain hungry .  My appetite has been huge for the past couple of days and I gather it’s because I’m running again.  I had a minor heel/ankle injury almost a month ago so I took a break from my new found love of running and gave myself a Bikram challenge .  My unlimited month at Bikram Yoga Dallas expired last week and I decided not to buy a package for several reasons, namely because it’s expensive and too far from where I live.  The commute  to and from the studio added 40 minutes to the already lengthy time commitment.  I really enjoyed Bikram and the effects it had on my body, particularly the strength in my legs.  I’m looking at other yoga studios that offer a variety of yoga classes with multiple locations around Dallas and Austin.  I’m recovering from a strained shoulder muscle so I’ve rested my arms.  This is difficult for someone who LOVES push-ups and planking .  So what did I do?  I rollerbladed my way back into running!

Just this past May, I conquered a steady 5K (for the 1st time since maybe 7th grade) and within days I had an injury.  I planned to rest until my heel/ankle were completely healed.  I was hoping the time off from running through most of June and into July wouldn’t set me back in distance.  When we were in Houston 1.5 weeks ago, it was pouring rain and I had energy to spare so I ran 3.5 miles on a treadmill in the glorious air conditioning.  It felt easy but I was a tad nervous for my return to outside running.

I have a route that I’ve been running in my neighborhood and figured it was right around 5K (based on my iPod playlist of course) but I didn’t know for sure.  I wanted to ease back into running without worrying about pace or time or miles.  But then I got curious.  Enter a gift from my awesome fiancé:  the Nike running chip .

Isn’t she (yes, she) cute?

The other part of this device is a small plug-in to your iPod.  So I ran yesterday morning with the chip and it turns out my route is almost 3.5 miles.  I ran this morning with the settings for a 5K.  I liked it because a voice comes on through your headphones and gives you updates on your distance.  This morning’s run:

I’m excited to track my mileage each week and set goals for distance and time.  The Nike website offers many options for race training:

And for personal goals:

Maybe one day I’ll graduate to a Garmin but the organization of this Nike program is an awesome (and much less expensive!) place for me to start.

If you are a runner, what do you use to measure your runs?  Would you use this Nike product or would you prefer a Garmin?
