Benefits of Physical Activity

Posted Feb 10 2009 12:31pm
According to public health organizations, healthy adults should engage in a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity 5 days a week or a minimum of 20 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity 3 days a week. Moderate-intensity physical activity is equal to a brisk walk, vacuuming, biking (10 to 12 mph), hiking, fishing, golfing (without a cart) or doing tai chi. Vigorous-intensity physical activity is equal to jogging, hiking up a steep trail, playing basketball or biking at 14 mph or more. In addition, it's important to do resistance exercise like weight training on 2 non-consecutive days each week.

The cool thing is that you don't have to do it all at once. Instead, you can break it into bouts throughout the day. For example, you can do two 15-minute sessions or three 10-minute sessions of moderate-intensity activity.
