Benefits of Indoor Bike Riding

Posted Jan 26 2013 9:16am

Happy Saturday! Thank goodness the ice storm is over. Hubby’s race was unfortunately canceled, but I am sure they made the right decision. No point risking all the runners and volunteers since there is a race almost every weekend. If you live in Knoxville, check out the KTC’s Events page for a list of area races.

Today I bring you a guest post about indoor bike riding. A very timely post since I will once again get to go SPINNING at the Provision Health and Wellness Center . I loved the spinning (and Zumba) classes I took there, but the cost for joining was more than I could afford. They had a January joining special that made it justifiable for me to join. WOOHOO!!! I look forward to Spinning, Zumba, Yoga, and more.

Indoor Cycling

What are the Health Benefits of Indoor Bike Riding?
Looking to transform your body and improve your health? Indoor bike riding carries a wealth of fitness potential, from weight loss to muscle toning to blood pressure management. Indoor cycling can even aid in diabetes management, and best of all, almost anyone can take part in this worthwhile exercise. With unparalleled safety and ease, it may just be the ultimate cardiovascular workout.

The Basics of Indoor Bike Riding
Stationary exercise bikes have existed for decades, but indoor cycling really took off in the 1980s with the introduction of Spinning® classes and Spinner® bikes. These stationary bikes are unique in the world of indoor cycling, primarily due to the inclusion of a weighted flywheel, which mimics the spinning action of a road bicycle.

But any indoor bicycle can provide immense benefit when used as part of a regular physical fitness routine. If you have limited experience with cycling, try working out for just 30 minutes per day, 3 to 4 days per week. That simple commitment can help you to build a foundation that will improve your overall fitness for years to come.

Cardiovascular Benefits
Indoor cycling can promote improved cardiovascular health by simulating the experience of riding a real bicycle and boosting your heart rate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the American Heart Association (AHA) have all professed the importance of rigorous activity for heart health, and indoor cycling provides the perfect controlled environment.

Weight Loss Benefits
According to the Spinning class FAQs , a person can burn up to 600 calories after only 40 minutes of indoor cycling. If you’re trying to lose weight, indoor cycling provides the perfect outlet to burn an excessive amount of calories in a very short amount of time, thereby promoting weight loss and enabling you to tone your body.

Other Benefits
Indoor cycling enables you to improve your posture, build your endurance, and tone a variety of muscle groups including quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, glutes and abdominals. Try an indoor cycling class for yourself, or invest in a high-quality stationary bike, and experience the benefits firsthand. The important thing is that you just make a commitment to exercise, and stick with it.

I am hoping that some Spinning classes get me ready to get my bike outside this Spring, Summer, and Fall. On today’s agenda: some cleaning, a little laundry, helping my friend A enter her first 31 order, and more.

What’s on your agenda today? Do you like spinning classes? Recumbent bikes? Only ride outdoors?
