Beat The Heat!

Posted Jul 08 2010 10:35am

As you may or may not know North america is literally a an oven right now. A massive heat wave has covered the continent  and caused brown outs on the east coast. So what can you do to beat the heat but still fit in you daily exercise routine? Here’s my list, along with some sweet treats to keep you cool.

  1. Skip the heat and schedule your exercise for either early morning or dusk. Soaring summer temperatures can become dangerous quickly when your body is no longer able to properly cool itself. Normally this is accomplished by sweating but when the heat is extreme, this may no longer be enough. High humidity can cause sweat to not evaporate as quickly, which prevents the body from releasing heat which can eventually cause damage to the brain and other vital organs.
  2. Stay hydrated! Your body’s ability to sweat and cool down depends on adequate rehydration. Drink plenty of water while you’re working out — even if you don’t feel thirsty. If you’re planning to exercise intensely or for longer than one hour, consider sports drinks instead. These drinks can replace the sodium, chloride and potassium you lose through sweating. Avoid drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol, which actually promote fluid loss.
  3. Take to the water. Everyone gathers around the pool or the beach in the summer for good reason, there’s nothing better than a refreshing dip! Instead of going for a run in the morning why not go to your local public pool and swim some laps. Or try out these cool Yoga for the Pool Poses from Women’s Health Magazine.  Plus why not try some fun summer activities like Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, or Surfing.
  4. Work out at home and don’t have air conditioning? Take a fan and place it in front of where you work out then place a bowl of ice cubes in front of it. As the ice melts and the water evaporates a fine mist will be blown in your direction to keep you cool.
  5. Relax in the shade with some yoga. Yoga mats do travel! Get some friends together and head to the park. Find some shade set up your mats and relax with some yoga. There’s nothing better than calming your body and mind with some deep breathing after a muggy and sticky day at the office.
  6. Try some healthy frozen treats! Having a summer BBQ in this heat makes for a sweaty mess. Cool your guests down with this sweet and savoury watermelon treat: Cut the watermelon into chunks, soak them in spiced rum (optional) and freeze them for a few hours. When ready eat dust the chunks with sea salt and brown sugar. Nom!
