Yesterday I took my very first class at Lululemon ! The girls from WellandGoodNYC hosted a free barre3 class led by the barre3 founder, Sadi Lincoln. Sadi’s flagship studio is in Portland, Oregon but she was in NYC to give us a special sneak preview of the class! Right now she has locations along the west coast but she might be opening a studio in NYC very soon!
As dancers know, the ballet barre is a wonderful prop designed to support the body in both static and dynamic movement leading to long, lean muscles. barre3 evolves the dancer’s workout by combining the grace of the ballet barre with the wisdom of yoga and the strength of Pilates. barre3 classes are set to an upbeat soundtrack and follow a vigorous pace moving through a sequence of postures designed to shape and lift the entire body.

Connects mind, body and breath and relieves stress.
I got to Lululemon at 8:30am (really 7:30am) to get a good spot in the front of the room. Let me just say, it is very dangerous to work out while staring at Lululemon clothes for an entire hour! I want everything in the store now!!!
I got a nice spot in front of Sadie right near Dori , Sara , and Melissa ! It was great seeing so many familiar faces early on a Sunday morning!
The class was probably pretty different than usual since we did not have an actual ballet barre in the room. We each brought our own yoga mats and Lululemon provided us with exercise balls. We started out by doing a bunch of different yoga moves to stretch and warm our bodies up. We did some planks, downward dogs, and other stretches that really got my heart rate going.
Next we did standing leg work with the ball. I’m guessing this is where we would normally use the ballet barre but instead we had to balance while pulsing our bodies up and down. We did squats, lunges, and several other exercises while pushing into the ball. I really liked this section! It was challenging and Sadi really focused on our posture and form.
We then got on all fours for some more thigh and butt work. We did a ton of leg lifts straight up and to the side. This is a familiar glute exercise from other classes but I’m never really a fan for some reason. I do know that it works and I will do anything to get a nice butt!
We ended with a challenging abs series. I really liked that we had the ball behind our backs instead of between our legs. Usually my back hurts during c-curve and I can’t get down low enough but the ball helped me to feel stabilized. We did legs lifts with the ball behind our backs and ended by holding our legs straight up in the air for maybe a minute! It felt great!
I really enjoyed this class and thought Sadi was an amazing instructor. She was very enthusiastic and really took the time to correct our form and explain each exercise. She played really great music too! I liked that there were a bunch of different yoga moves between each challenging exercise. The class was tough but relaxing at the same time. My only complaint was that there were no push ups or arm exercises with weights. My favorite part of barre method style classes is always arms in the beginning! I’m not sure if weights are a usual part of this class but I sure hope so!
The event ended with a raffle and some breakfast treats!
Dori and I both won a prize!! I won the barre3 DVd which includes my very own exercise ball! Dori won the grand prize of a personal fitting session and a Lululemon outfit!! Slightly jealous but happy we both won something!!
After the class, I headed over to Equinox for some intenSati! It was a great class led by Darbi (bottom right).
Photos were taken by the wonderful Norn ! I played around after class and pretended to teach in the front of the room. One day….
I am teaching this Wednesday at 6pm at Simple Studios if anyone would like to come! Let me know!
