When it comes down to fitting in time for meditation and mobility, it is often difficult to do so when life has other plans. Before I became a daddy, I had all kinds of time to do my workouts, cook balanced meals, shovel the snow, watch movies, read books and spend time with family and friends. Now, as a working dad and husband, I have to approach my daily routine in a more balanced manner.
I understand that life can be busy, but that does not mean that one has to give up on the important aspects of health and wellness such as flexibility or meditation/relaxation. As you see in the photo above, Keira just woke up early from her afternoon nap (which is why she still has her su-su in her mouth) and I decided to finish my hip release/meditation while taking in some loving energy at the same time. We lovingly held this powerful embrace for well over 25 minutes. No meditation has ever come close to the blissful feeling I had during this quiet time on a Saturday afternoon.
Notice the body position in the photo. I was also working one releasing tension in my lower back while paying attention to my breathing. Keira enjoyed the energy as my belly would rise on the inhale and fall on the exhale. Meditation does not always have to be cross legged under a tree to achieve maximal results.
In the second photo, I was combining three activities into one special time with the girls. Every evening after they have a bath, we feed them a snack – in this case it was nuts, strawberries and cheese with some water. I like to sit on the floor to come down to their level for a change, and when I do, I am not only spending quality time with each of them, I have them sit on my legs so that I have their weight to assist in opening my hips.
The muscles of the inner thigh – the adductors – often become very tight because of our modernized lifestyle, which in many cases, adds to poor posture and back injuries. A few years ago, my knees would have been much higher because I was super tight, and now I am working my way down towards the floor as I release the tension throughout my body.
What tips do you have with respect to balancing family time with your fitness?
Until next time,
Karl
