Back To The Basics

Posted Nov 11 2012 9:28pm

The outdoor soccer season is coming to a quick close in the next couple of weeks.  I’m going to miss playing outside (except when it’s -20, obv), but also excited to be playing co-ed again.  I’ve signed up for Monday nights with one of my bffs/teammates and we’re awaiting our team assignment.  The league doesn’t start til after Thanksgiving, so I’ve got a bit of a wait (but not that long!).  The fall soccer season was both awesome and frustrating.  In the Monday night women’s league, we lost a few core players from the spring and summer seasons, and we just never got the chemistry back in order.  But, as frustrating as it’s been, I love the friends I’ve made from this team and we’re hoping to regroup in the springtime and kick some ass again.  We’ve got one final game tomorrow night, and then the following week it’s playoffs.  It’d be awesome if we could click and be the sleeper team.  It could happen!

I played keeper the week we had pics taken.  Which sort of sucked because there are NO action shots of me playing.  Boo!

My Sunday league team has been completely amazeballs.  Thanks to my one teammate on my Mon team, myself and couple other girls got to join her Div 1 tri-county women’s team and the season was stellar.  We had a total heartbreaker today with a 1-0 loss to the the team we were tied for first place, and therefore came in 2nd place in the league.  But, as a young team (I think they’ve only been around for 2 years tops), it’s a HUGE improvement and we’re hungry for spring season!

Which means I’ve got a lot of re-learning to do over the winter.  I’m used to playing fullback on the wing and with this team we’ve already got a solid, established unit on D.  So that means playing at mid or striker which I have not done in 13 years (ack I feel old).  I’m far faster than I ever was in high school, but I’m not used to making bursting runs with the ball.  So, with my shiny new ball acquired this weekend I plan to take any decent weather day to the local park and run drills til my feet bleed (well maybe not to THAT point, but you get the idea).

I’m kind of excited to get back to the gritty basics of playing soccer and becoming a better teammate/player.  Anyone nearby that wants to join is more than welcome, so give a shout!  Winking smile

I think getting back to playing soccer was one of the BEST decisions I made in 2012, and I can only hope 2013 will bring even more awesome games ahead!
