Avocados- Healthy Fats

Posted Jan 27 2009 8:31pm
I love avocados. The buttery, succulent richness in every bite. And, I don’t feel bad eating them, even with the high fat content. That’s because Avocados are high in monounsaturated fats. These particular types of fats have been proven to encourage weight loss. Dieters everywhere should be eating more of this particular fat. One component of monounsaturated fat found in avocados is oleic acid which recently showed success in lowering bad cholesterol awhile simultaneously improving good cholesterol. Avocados are also high in other nutrients like: potassium, folate, vitamin B-6, and vitamin C. But, in my opinion, the healthy fats in avocados are it’s prime value, while also providing an ample amount of fiber...it stands to reason why dieters are flocking to eat more avocados. When buying avocados look for dark skins free of blemishes and visible sunken spots. They should give slightly to thumb pressure. When preparing avocados score length wise with a sharp knife and twist apart. Then gently, but swiftly tap the knife edge into the pit...it will stick and then you can lift out the pit easily. Next, you can either use a spoon or a handy-dandy avocado slicer (which I love) to scoop the flesh out of the skin. If you will be saving a portion of the avocado it is better to leave the pit in one half. sprinkle with fresh lemon juice, and cover with plastic wrap to store in the refrigerator. I usually look for smaller sized avocados to avoid doing all this and just eat the whole thing, albeit a smaller portion. Enjoy your healthy fat the avocado way!
