More and more kids nowadays are spending too much time inside watching television, playing video games, texting, etc. Part of it is a safety concern. Parents are often unwilling to allow their children to run freely through the neighborhood as they might have 20 years ago. Part of it is an addiction to all things digital. And part of it is that we’re so busy as parents that we don’t have time to take play with the kids outside as much as we would like.

Whatever the reason, America’s kids are more often than they should be suffering from nature withdrawal. It’s crucial that kids feel in touch with nature for a number of reasons. Kids that play outside often are in better shape and the rise in childhood obesity is an indication that the more the merrier. Kids need time to burn off energy, be creative, and learn about the planet.

Additionally, kids that are in touch with nature are generally more likely to want to protect it. If you hardly ever go outside and see the wonders of nature you’re less likely to be vigilant that it stays pristine. If you’re not sure how to get your kids outside here are some great options for reconnecting:

1. Tour a Local Organic Farm
Small local farms often love visitors and it’s a great way to show your kids the ins and outs of life on a working farm. Introduce them to farm animals and show them how milk is made, how eggs are hatched, and how their favorite fruits and vegetables are grown.

2. Consider a Hike.
Hiking with the kids is such fun. Choose a hike that’s easy enough so they won’t tire out too much. Kids love waterfalls and bodies of water. So consider ending the hike with a picnic and maybe even a swim.

3. Camping in the Backyard
Start your kids off camping in the backyard if a planned camping trip is too time consuming. This way they learn to put up the tent, eat camp food, and the fun of sleeping outside. Next up, consider a camping trip to a nearby state or national park.
