The daffodils and crocuses are very welcome after a long hard winter. However, to many peope, this is the first sign of suffering…ALLERGIES ARE ON THE WAY: Along with tho wonderful sights of blooms, and the smells of flowers, and the surround view of color, comes allergies. Pollen is in the air, and this will cause eyes to become red, to burn, and to itch. This will cause the eyes to water and also cause the blood vessels to swell.
Allergies of the eye, are they different than other types of allergies?
Not really. Just like any allergy, the eye allergies happen because the immune system is sensitized and thereby overreacts to foreign substances,that are normally harmless. The allergen (that substance that is the problem) makes cells in the eye (the mast cells) to acatually release histamine,which is a chemical that is poduced because of a reaction to something in the eye that your immune system just cannot manage. Histamine, and also other chemicals are responsible for all those darn symptoms of allergies. And very interesting is, that these mast cells are located throughout the body, and there is a high concentrations of mast cells in the eyes.
What are the most common eye allergens?

Most allergens are airborne. Such as, Indoors: -pet hair, -dust mites,-molds, these are the most common of the allergy triggers. Outdoors: -grass, -trees, also -weed pollens. There are environmental substances like smoke, pollution, that actually irritate the eyes, but these are not allergens. These are irritants.
Is it possible for eye allergies to hurt my eyesight?
Allergies can be uncomfortable, irritating, itchy, even burning, but they will not harm the eye.
Can eye allergies actually be treated?
There are different kinds of eye allergies and they need to be treated differently. The first step always needs to be prevention, and / or avoidance of those allergens that are the triggers.
* When you know that the pollen is high, keep the outnyways in the summertime.
* And, lucky you, make sure to dust and to vacuum often.
* Always wash your hands when: petting animals; also, change clothing if you have been in contact with other pets ….
* Don’t allow any mold to build up, especially in the bathroom, the kitchen or the basement. Buy a dehumidifier.
*Try not to rub the eyes, it will only make them feel worse.
And always check with your doctor before you diagnose and treat your eyes!!
