And Now It’s Time To Study

Posted Oct 14 2013 9:04am

In exactly one week from today, I will be taking Step 2 of my US Medical Licensing Exam Boards.  I took Step 1 right before I started my blog.  Actually, my first blog entry was the day after boards last year !

Now, I have to take Step 2, which is unfortunately 2 parts.  One part is a 9 hour multiple choice exam.  The other part (the one I’m taking next week) is a 7 hour clinical exam with standardized patients.  Luckily this part is just pass/fail with no actual scores.  So I just need to make sure I don’t fail.  I can do that. Right? ;-)

The weather in Indianapolis has been so ridiculously gorgeous I can’t even explain it.  Perfect blue skies, cool temps, bright sun shining down, a nice breeze, fall foliage all around- it’s spectacular.  I took advantage of the weather and did all my workouts last week outside.  I did lots of long runs and short runs and walks, just to soak up the sunshine.

The other day, I was out on my run and spotted this tunnel I’ve never noticed before.

Naturally, I had to see what it was all about, so I jogged down the path.

The tunnel was longer than these pictures make it out to be and I’ll be honest, it was kind of freaky!!

But once I reached the end of the tunnel, this is what I saw:

The tunnel emptied out into a small, walled off garden.  I don’t think there is any other way to access this garden besides the tunnel.

It was small and square, with grass in the middle and trees and shrubs along the outside walls.  The center was around the tunnel opening and had a small staircase.

There was a little bench that went around the center.  I wish I had taken more pictures.  Maybe I will go back today and get you some better photos.  It was the most peaceful and secluded garden.  I loved it.  I decided to take a seat and meditate for 5 minutes in the sunshine before turning to run back.  It was exactly 2 miles there and 2 miles back, which makes it the perfect little spot to rest in the middle of a run.

Half-way through my run back, I spotted this stairway:

These stairs weren’t a surprise to me like the tunnel and garden were.  I know these stairs well because they lead to Butler- my alma mater.  To break up my run back, I decided to sprint up the stairs 3 times.  Holy moly it was hard.  My heart was beating out of my chest!

It wouldn’t be a good run on the Butler canal unless I saw some turtles.  I just love all the wildlife in this area.  Fish, turtles, muskrats, beavers, chipmunks, squirrels, geese, ducks, they are all there!

When I got home, I had to quickly change into my fanciest business attire- my suit!  I had a mock interview scheduled with the school to help me prepare for my real residency interviews.

10:14:9

The mock interview actually wasn’t immensely helpful.  My interviewer kept telling me about the different interviewer techniques I might encounter.  He spent most of the time talking about “behavioral interviewing”.  I’d never heard of this- have you guys?

Any interviewing advice for me?

I really just wanted to practice talking about the questions I know I will get- why I chose ophthalmology, why medicine, what my strengths/weaknesses are, etc.  But he was too busy telling me about behavioral interviewing so I didn’t get a chance to talk haha!

Oh well.  Maybe I will get lots of different behavioral questions on my real interviews and be grateful I had his tips ahead of time.

Right after my interview, Kyle and I headed home to play with these little ones:

Kyle’s sister just had little baby Max and I hadn’t met him yet!!  We had so much fun playing with our niece Sophia (2 years old) and new nephew Max.  They are way too cute.  I asked Sophia if she would be the flower girl in our wedding and she said yes.  Thank goodness!!

Questions:

Have you found any secret running places or secret gardens?

Any interview tips for me?  I would love to hear them!!
