A Trip To Whole Foods in Hollywood

Posted Feb 03 2012 10:17pm

The Hollywood district of Portland boasts some of the most beautiful houses around!! Off of the main drag, Sandy Blvd. , you can find an old theater, tiny ancient shops, chiropractors, Trader Joes , 24 Hr Fitness (it has horrible parking) and now….a Whole Foods!

This Whole Foods happens to be my most favorite out of all 6 that are within 15 miles of my house (I know, I am super spoiled). I love walking in and being taken over by the sense of wellness and health that Whole Foods promotes. It’s almost a spiritual feeling. Does your supermarket do that for you?

I’ve got my list….time to shop!!

The first stop is Townshends Tea Bar which is at the entrance. Last week they featured an Oatmeal Cookie Tea Latte!! It was a sticky rice pu-erh tea which was infused with cinnamon and spices and made with soy. It was the BEST tea ever! So of course, I had to have some to start my shopping trip off right! I brought my own mug and almond milk since soy is not Paleo (and not very good for you).

This is Phillip

Phillip said that this is the only Whole Foods with a built in Townshends. He also told me that they are now making Bubble Tea w/ chia seeds as well as jellies! How cool is that?!

Next up is the produce section. I loooove produce!! I like it better at a local farmers market, but since those are a little more rare in early February, this will suffice just fine!

Mmm....samples!

I love the beautiful colors (and how they always have delicious strawberries and grapes to sample up front!) and variety that you can find here. Yes, it is pricey and I do not buy all of my produce from here, but when I can, I do.

Next I wander back to the bulk section. I love bulk! It gives you the chance to try different things that you may not want to buy in normal quantities. Today, I am picking up almond flour, chia seeds and sesame seeds. Why? You’ll see….;0)

This Pete and the meat!

After exploring that area, I head back to the meat counter. I love talking to the deli guys about which meat comes from where (true Portlandia style-if you have no idea what I am referring to, you must click this link and watch the video!!) and what new meats I can try!

Today, it’s nitrate free bacon and grass fed beef! Pete told me that all the meats they carry are fresh and nitrate/nitrite free! I picked up the maple and applewood smoked bacon!

Then it’s over to check out the soups!! I am always hopeful that one of these days they will have a Paleo soup, but it is rare. Whole Foods soups usually have less gunk than New Seasons. I love their different varieties.

I love their gigantic salad bar with all the fun, fresh options to chose from!! So awesome!!

I quickly buzz through the aromatic bakery and wind up in the nut butter aisle. Mmm….I do miss my peanut butter :0( But, I know that, especially as a Type O, it is really hard on my body and while it may taste yummy now, it will not help me in the long run. I stare longingly at the jars of raw almond butter ($15) and Creamy Cashew Butter ($9) and walk on toward the register where friendly folks check out my groceries and off I go!

I love grocery shopping!!

And…just when I thought my trip could not get any better…..surprise guest!! Tim came and joined me for lunch!!

That's Tim!

My salad bar creation!!

What about you? Do you love grocery shopping? Do you hate it? Why? Have you ever been to Whole Foods?

Have an awesome day!!
