A Potent Potion with All the Goodness of Five Special Ingredients

Posted Nov 26 2012 10:05am

There are fivealmostmagical ingredients that you can use to make a potion to keep you free of bugs and other nasties during the winter months and of course the rest of the year.

Those ingredients with their special benefits are:

1. Garlic cloves - they have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. As well as being rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, selenium and manganese, eating garlic regularly reduces the risk of esophageal, stomach and colon cancer. The vitamin C helps protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation; the vitamin B6 and selenium helps prevent heart disease; the selenium also provides protection against cancer and heavy metal toxicity; and the manganese helps raise the level of HDL (the good form of cholesterol).

2. Onions – they are a powerful antiseptic, rich in vitamins A, B and C as well as being a potent source of folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, chromium, iron and dietary fiber. Onions also contain quercetin, one of the antioxidant compounds that help delay or slow the oxidative damage to cells and tissue of the body. Onions also increase blood circulation and cause sweating, both of which help boost the immune system. Sinus conditions and infections respond to onions because they help to drain mucus from the cavities and to loosen phlegm.

Ginger root – it acts as an antihistamine, helping in the treatment of allergies but it also provides substantial relief for the pain caused by inflammation. Coughs, colds and flu respond well to ginger root, soothing sore throats and coughs while relieving muscle aches and pains too.

Horseradish root – it is very rich in vitamin C, ensuring a generous boost to the immune system and helping to alleviate viral and other infections while protecting from inflammation. Amongst many other health benefits, horseradish is also very effective for a stuffy nose or sinus infection, unblocking the sinuses in a similar way that hot and spicy foods containing peppers do.

Cayenne peppers – these have the special ability to ease stomach upsets, ulcers, sore throats, spasmodic and irritating coughs as well as diarrhea. They also help break up and move congested mucus. Once mucus begins to leave the body, relief from flu symptoms will usually follow. By heating the body, the natural process of detoxification is streamlined.

How to prepare your potent potion

Once you have decided to go ahead and you have sourced your supplies, you will need equal parts of each of the ingredients plus Mason jars, a bottle of organic apple cider vinegar, some preparation bowls and a pair of gloves – that is if you want to keep your hands smelling sweetly.

Chop up or grate your fresh ingredients (remembering equal portions of each) and fill a Mason jar ¾ full before covering with the organic cider vinegar right to the top of the jar. Close the jar and give it a really good shake. If the liquid settles further down, just top up with more of the vinegar before sealing and putting away in a cupboard for a 14 day fermentation period in the dark. Don't completely forget about it because you will need to give the jar a good shake at least once a day during that time.

When the 14 days is up, filter through a sieve into a glass bottle, cap it and put it back into its dark home ready and waiting to be used. The residue left behind in the sieve can also be put to good use – pop it into a container in the fridge and add to all types of savoury dishes such soups and stews, when cooking or preparing meals, for extra flavor and goodness.

Your potent potion meanwhile is strong stuff so use just a teaspoon at a time until you have got used to the taste and the strength.

  • You can gargle and swallow every day for an immune-boosting, germ-busting winter tonic or more often at the first sign of colds, flu or a sore throat.

  • You can add some to a nutritious bowl of bone broth.

  • You can use in place of condiments such as spices or pepper.

  • You can even inhale as an effective sinus clearer.

But whatever you do, make the effort to prepare your own potent potion so it is ready and waiting for you to use as needed.
