A Note on Green Holiday Travel and Time Wasted

I was chatting with the barista at my favorite café in Charleston about our plans for holiday travel. She was obviously upset that she wasn’t going to be able to make it home for a variety of reasons this holiday. Money and time off were all too precious and there just wasn’t enough to go around. But so many of us still make the trip out of guilt even when it’s not economic or realistic.

We feel too guilty to not to go home for Christmas, so no matter the extreme stress it may cause, we make the trip. We get home, spend a day, and then rush back into our travels once again. Excessive and unnecessary travel during the holidays is high impact. It puts a drain on our wallets and the planet.

Why not stay home for the holidays and spend it with family and friends in your neck of the woods? Give yourself a break this holiday season. Nontraditional get-togethers can be the most memorable. I remember when I lived in D.C. and there wasn’t a chance that work would provide enough time to go home. A large group of us turned out to be in the same boat and a multi-course feast ensued. I still think about that Thanksgiving and the fun we had pretending to be adults.

It often makes more sense to wait until you can get more time off from work to head home for an extended period of time. This way you’re not wasting fossil fuels for a two day stopover. If you do venture home, try and allot enough time to drive rather than fly. It’s usually cheaper and it has a much lower impact on your carbon footprint.
