A Guide To Which Foods Slow Down Your Metabolism

Posted Sep 20 2011 3:38am

There are certain foods that hinder the body’s metabolism to perform at its best. Here we’ll be taking a look at these foods and why they slow down your metabolism. Sugar is one of the main culprits in slowing down the body’s metabolic rate. Eating too much sugar overloads the body and causes the sugar levels in the blood to spike rapidly, and in turn this causes the body to store extra fat and burn less calories. Make sure to reduce the intake of refined sugars and that means cutting down or eliminating completely cookies, cakes, chocolate, and candy. If you need to eat something sweet, then eat fruit because it does not cause your blood sugar levels to spike.

Alcohol is another food that’s filled with calories and also sugar and we know how that affects the body’s metabolism. In addition, alcohol has the effect of causing dehydration in the body, and if you’re not fully hydrated, then your metabolism is not working as effectively as it could. Moderate alcohol consumption does not affect the body’s hydration levels, but if you over consume it will.

White bread is another type of food that is known to slow down the body’s metabolism. White bread is very easily digested and has low dietary fiber and a low nutritional value as well. White bread also causes your blood sugar levels to increase. You should substitute white bread for the whole meal variety that will increase your metabolic rate. Whole meal bread is much harder for the body to digest so it burns more calories. It also has a better nutritional value and it doesn’t cause your blood sugar levels to increase.

Fatty foods also can affect your body’s metabolism. The body takes a long time to break down fatty foods and this slows down its metabolic rate. So it’s best to avoid fast foods and fried foods if you want to have a more efficient metabolism. In addition, refined foods such as rice and pasta are very easily broken down by the body. And, this means that the body doesn’t have to work very hard in order to digest the nutrition that is found in this food and that results in a slower metabolism. Besides these refined carbohydrates do not offer high nutritional value, so it’s best to consume brown rice and wheat pasta. These better choices require that your metabolism work harder to digest these nutrients and that helps to speed it up.
