NEW AGE INTIMATE APPAREL-- The same impulse that has made jeans and other casual styles central to most women's wardrobes has given Kathleen Zirnhelt, VP-general manager, intimate apparel, for Gitano, the inspiration fora new line of sleepwear and daywear. "I realized that shopping had become a chore for many women by the end of the '80s, that their values had changed, and they were looking for a reasonably priced, comfortable kind of intimate apparel that would be fun to wear and to shop for."
SPORTY SLEEPWEARK-- The major theme behind the design of Gitano sleepwear is sports. Japanese school uniforms, Baseball sleepshirts have generous specs and V-necks for comfort. Colors are unusual in this category--shocking pink combined with navy, purple with teal. Boxer shorts are designed to match. Other baseball-style button-front tops are paired with boxer shorts for jaunty pj's that have fun sayings like Nite Babe and Winner on the front.
VARSITY VERSIONS-- Fleece sweatshirts that say Snooze Club and other slogans with dorm appeal have neck and placket details, jersey trim, and bold stitching. Color coordination among all the items makes them easy to merchandise. There are numerous variations of the popular henley, and a flannel and gray heather fleece collection of nightshirts and two-piece long pajamas trimmed with plaid. sheath bridal gown, These too have wider necks for easy sleeping.
ROUGHNECKS-- Jersey rugbies in stripes and solids, long-sleeve polos with V-necks, and flannel shirts in updated plaids and solids translate popular tops into sleepgear. More traditional customers will like pastel sleepshirts and a pointelle long-john type night-gown in flora. Real old-fashioned long-johns are also available, with drop-seat of course.
MIX-AND-MATCH-- Daywear is meant to appeal to today's casual dresser, who may not always want to wear the same kind of underwear. There are bikini underwires, but also cotton undershirts, both matching either bikini or high-cut pants or cotton-lycra shorts with light control. Jersey sports bras or croptops can be paired off with a variety of boxer shorts. In other words, practically anything goes, from more sedate, sporty underwear to ultra-feminine and sexy.
