A chilly 10km...

Posted Dec 21 2008 5:14pm
Well, the snow didn't start until late last night so I went to bed hopeful that it wouldn't be too bad come morning. I've been waking up pretty early lately and when my eyes popped open at 5:30 this morning I went straight to the window to check out the night's accumulation. The road was now white, but I could by looking at my husband's truck parked on the driveway that it wasn't very much.
So, still on the high of yesterday's chilly run, I decided I'd venture down to the running store and see who was there to go running. I probably changed my mind back and forth about 10 times before finally layering up with whatever warm gear I could find. Today was only -5 in comparison to yesterday's -12.

This morning I added a pair of capris under my tights to help insulate the junk in my trunk, and decided to wear my heavier and warmer Taiga jacket instead of my thin wind breaker. This turned out to be a good idea because the added length helped keep the tush warm.

It was a slow drive down to the store and I was terrified the whole way. Luckily there weren't many people on the road so I could drive at 15 km/h without anyone on my tail. When I got to the store there were about 10 other brave souls so we decided to do a 10 km route with a 4 km tagged on the end for those who wanted more distance. Just before we headed out one of my friends from the clinic came in which got me much more excited about running out in the snow. I was worried I'd have to go it alone since there weren't really any others around who run at my pace.

Like yesterday it took a little while to warm up, but once we did the cold wasn't an issue. My cheeks and teeth were cold again but I wasn't going to run 10 km without chatting so I had to just suck it up. This morning the run felt tougher because all of the sidewalks had a few inches of snow on them. The extra resistance felt kind of like running in sand, so the legs definitely got a good workout. We had to walk some extra breaks because the snow was too deep in places, but we made it.

I even dragged my camera along so I could take a terrible self-portrait as we headed down the last stretch back to the store...

So, here's the details:
  • Total distance: 10.19 km (only 17.66 km left for 1000 in 2008)
  • Total time: 1:30:19 (the snow makes for a slower 10km, that's for sure!)
  • Average pace: 8:49 min/km

When we got back to the store I spent a few minutes lovingly eyeing up the fleece toques, balaclavas and neck warmers...Santa is in the den as we speak wrapping presents, so maybe one of these goodies will find it's way to our tree...?
