A Brutally Honest Review: SELF–Sculpt Sexy Legs Fast! (DVD)

Have you had an awesome weekend? It’s been super low key in the Rocky Mountain casa! Just what the Doctor ordered after so much crazy driving weather this past week.
It’s been one insane winter; Roads closed left and right and loads of avalanche warnings.
I’m particularly worried about a friend of mine that is going heli-skiing in the back country for a whole week. Her party helicoptered in to a remote alpine hut today. They’ll stay there for a whole week and will leave next Sunday when the next group arrives.
Everyone going is extremely well trained but it’s still a dangerous proposition. So if you wouldn’t mind sparing a prayer my friend’s way, I would be most appreciative!
A Brutally Honest Review – My Philosophy
So here’s the deal, I absolutely love checking out other blogs for product recommendations. Whether it be make-up or food products, I trust the word of my fellow bloggers.
And yet, I know there are sometimes that people can fall prey to the lure of free products. Next thing you know they’re raving about their freebies with no regard as to whether the product actually deserves the praise.
That’s why I always call my reviews – “A Brutally Honest Review.”
I promise to always give my honest opinion about the products I review for the blog. And you can rest assured that I will always let you know if I was gifted the product in exchange for a review.
A Brutally Honest Review – SELF Sculpt Sexy Legs Fast DVD
This AM I woke up in a fabulous mood and ready to get my workout on!
I started my day with some yoga and then decided to follow it up with a leg workout. Since, I had a SELF DVD (borrowed from my local library) I decided to pop that in my PS3.
This was my very first SELF DVD and I didn’t really know what to expect. Having said that, I absolutely love SELF magazine (now that I have forgiven them for that whole Kelly Clarkson photo-shop debacle ) so I was hoping for a great workout.
This particular workout, released in 2007, features an hour long leg workout. The instructor is a black belt in Seido Karate, Violet Zaki.
The DVD uses unfortunately cheesy 1980s style workout music and an equally out dated setting. Suffice it to say that there are times when a scenic backdrop really assists the DVD (such as in any Rodney Yee yoga workout) and other times it’s just superfluous. This was the latter.
On the whole, I would say that the workout had a very aerobics like flare. If group classes are your deal (or if you like marching on the spot) then this DVD would likely be your thing. Unfortunately, that’s not how I roll.
To be fair to the workout I did my best to stick with it for the whole hour. But a combination of poor instruction from the Ms. Zaki and poor camera angles (sometimes you couldn’t even see what she wanted you to do) made it impossible for me to continue.
After half an hour I took the DVD out; I couldn’t take it anymore. And unfortunately, when I don’t like a workout I’m that much more likely to “phone it in.”
Bottom Line? This DVD will appeal to those that are used to group aerobics classes. And while the endless amount of lunges and squats will undoubtedly work your legs, on the whole, I find it of exceedingly poor quality. I do not recommend this DVD.
Jackie Warner to the Rescue
Sure, I hadn’t made it through the whole DVD but that didn’t mean I was ready to call it a day.
This DVD is also an hour but instead of working one body part for that whole time, it is broken up into 20 minute segments targeting either the upper body, lower body, or the core. Cool thing is, the menu is set up to allow you to build a customized workout with anywhere from one to all of the segments.
On this occasion I chose to do the lower body workout.
You start off with a quick warm-up and then you proceed to circuits demonstrated by four different trainers (from Jackie’s show warm-up). She’s fantastic at instructing – never once do you feel like you don’t know what to do. Not to mention the camera shots make sure you know exactly what the moves should look like.
Awesome, I tell you!!!
By the end of Jackie’s 20 minute workout my legs were on fire and I was dripping in sweat. There was no doubt in my mind that I had worked everything effectively. Plus, I never once wanted to turn the DVD off!
Bottom Line? If you’re looking for a great lower body workout – hit up “ One on One Training with Jackie .” She knows her stuff! In fact, her workouts are the best ones I’ve ever done, outside of the times I worked with my trainer. They’re the only two people that have ever made it hurt so good!
