9 km Sunday

Posted Feb 10 2009 11:32am
As mentioned yesterday, our long run for Sunday was schduled to be 9 km. This distance felt just about right since I'm still working through what are hopefully the last few weeks of drop-dead tiredness from the first trimester. I know that not everyone's pregnancies are exactly by the books, but since I've been pretty lucky in how I've felt so far, I am really hoping some of the fatigue starts to go away soon.

Everything I've read so far says how many of the first trimester symptoms will lessen as you move into your second trimester. Although I'm still hungry, the absolute ravenous-ness that I felt at the beginning has definitely decreased. I would say I'm still hungrier than usual, but nothing like at the start when I couldn't even stay full for 45 minutes before getting hungry again! My tummy is also feeling more settled now. I escaped any nauseousness, but often felt a little 'off' - not so much anymore though so that's nice.

I have to admit it was almost a little unsettling to suddenly have these symptoms decrease, but apparently that's pretty common and so is the unease of suddenly feeling better. My tummy is still growing, although I'm still in my regular clothes. People who know me say they notice the little bulge but I don't think others would realize it's a half-banana in there! I still haven't told work yet, so hopefully they don't start guessing before I'm ready to spill the beans.

Anyhow, I headed out for 9km with the run club yesterday morning. Unfortunately the route started with the first few km mostly uphill. It was good for a workout, but tough on the old energy level - I was totally pooped by the time we got onto flatter ground. It was also a strange run because my friend and I somehow ended up leading the pack for most of the run. It was almost disorienting to not have anyone in front of us! ha ha.

I'm still pretty tired when I run though. I'm trying to make sure I drink lots and lots of water and since I'm really not sure if gels and beans are a good idea during pregnancy, I've been experimenting with bringing things like nuts and dried cranberries along instead. I don't think they pack the same punch because they don't have the caffeine and extra sugar, but they seem to do some good. Anyhow, here's what we did:
  • Total distance: 9.17 km
  • Total time: 1:04:54
  • Average pace: 7:05/km

Even though I have all kinds of reasons why I am running slower these days, it always feels kind of weird to see the average pace get slower and slower. I KNOW that now is not the time to push, or improve or set records or anything like that, but it's a big change from the excitement of seeing your pace creep down second by second. Oh well, I've got other things to get excited about - like my ever-expanding waistline and the fact that I'm even able to still get out and be active!
