I like to think I was a fairly intelligent child. When I was 5, my mum enrolled me in kindergarten, just like all of the other kiddies my age. Apparently I was that kid that read books to other kids, and had above-average spelling abilities in comparison to what was considered ‘normal’ for my age. Half way through the year, the teachers at my primary school decided to do dozens of tests and finally determined that I should be ‘accelerated’ into Grade 1.
Yesterday I made a trip to Bulk Barn and had a little experience that made me question whether or not I would be ‘accelerated’ if I were a 5 year old today.
In addition to re-stocking my essentials, I planned to make some new protein oat bars. I wasn’t sure exactly what combination of dried fruit I was going to use, so I decided to make a game-time decision and pick up whatever struck my fancy when I walked into the store. As I was scooping some oats into a bag, a little boy, who looked about 5, and his mum walked into the store. Just like any little kid in a candy shop, the boy started running up and down the aisles to see what was in all the bins. I continued to cruise along picking up the things on my list, when I heard this:
“12-grain flour! Pastry flour! Spelt flour! Organic kamut flour! Organic coconut flour! Oh… gluten flour.” (pauses, and a disgusted expression comes over his face) “Eww. I can’t have gluten. But look mum, they’ve also got gluten free teff flour! Should we get that?”
I stood there in shock. This child rattled off the names of these flours like they were as common as apples and oranges. Not wanting to stare, I carried on. Finally, I arrived in the dried fruits aisle and was thinking about my oat bars. The contenders were goji berries, dried cranberries, raisins, apricots or dates. Just then, the boy and his mum came around the corner. He started looking at the fruit bins, and then he said:
“Oooh dried fruit! My favourite! Mum, do you think they have goji berries?”
Again, I was shocked. I’m pretty sure I didn’t even know what a goji berry was until about 2 years ago, and I definitely couldn’t have told you what it was at the age of 5! Kids are pretty smart these days – it’s a little scary! Then and there, my mind was made up. Goji berries and dried apricots in the oat bars. Decision made.
Lots of progress was made schoolwork-wise yesterday, and even managed to avoid any self-help book purchases whilst at Starbucks/Chapters. (Although I’ve definitely got my eye on a few!) By the time I got home, I was rather hungry and in need of a speedy dinner. This ended up being a delicious, super-stacked, fully-loaded sandwich.
From top to bottom we have:
- mushrooms and diced chicken breast (stir fried in a bit of balsamic vinegar and herbs)
- a roasted red bell pepper
- shredded parmesan, which melted nicely on top of….
- some slices of green zucchini (also stir fried)
- romaine lettuce
- a layer of edamame hummus
It was a beast. A scrumptious one.
Today: This morning’s spin class was fab, and my playlist featured 2 of my fave Glee songs from the finale, Any Way You Want It and Faithfully. Sooo good! After the class, I did a quick core workout consisting of the following:
3x:
- 30 Russian twists, holding a 5kg medicine ball
- 2 minutes in plank pose on the BOSU (rounded side up, forearms resting on the rounded part)
- 30 bicycle crunches
This week I’ll be working out with Mr Trainer on Monday and Tuesday (rather than Tues/Thurs) due to the Canada Day holiday. I’m expecting quite the backside-kicking tomorrow, so I opted for no weights today. Speaking of workouts, I forgot to mention yesterday that I have posted new ones under the Upper and Lower body sections. Check them out on the Workouts page if you’re looking for something to do this week!
As soon as I finish this Peanut Butter Chocolate Green Monster …
…I will be off to my my lovely friend Beth’s house for a study date (and a little chit chat… hopefully more of the former).
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
