‘maybe she’s born with it’ or maybe it was the sodium laureth sulfate

Hello world! I’m feeling really selfish today and writing a post for myself. Although I know there are harsh and even unhealthy ingredients and chemicals lurking in beauty products, I can never seem to remember which are the worst of the worst.
As it turns out, products we use everyday to clean, smooth, beautify, moisturize, sanitize, and scentify our bodies are actually a wonderful concoction of toxic chemicals.
Think that pure and innocent Dove soap you’re using isn’t harmful? Think again.
As women (and men!) we use a variety of these personal care products multiple times a day. Toothpaste. Mouthwash. Deodorant. Soap. Body Wash. Face Wash. Moisturizer. The list goes on and on! And the chemicals add up and up in our bodies over time.
Unfortunately, many if not all commercial personal care products contain at least 1 harmful ingredient despite their warm and fuzzy branding and promises to make us beautiful. We put these chemical cocktails on our skin and they end up in our bodies, wreaking havoc on our hormones and other body systems, increasing our cancer risk, not to mention harming our environment. YIKES! Talk about an scary way to not live well.
And the worst news of all is not even 20% of these products are tested for safety by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It makes my head spin and my stomach sick at the thought of all the unsafe crap I’ve been using my entire life and how these companies and regulators in our country don’t seem to mind one bit.
The best thing to do is become educated and take control of what we put in and on our bodies so we can fill our bathrooms with safe and natural products. Once you identify personal products that live up to your new set of standards in your grocery, local health food, or discount store, the rest is a piece of cake!
A quick and easy way to see how your products rank is to visit Good Guide . You can look up a specific product or company to see a health, environment, and societal rating. They even have a toolbar you can download so when you’re shopping for a product online so you can instantly see how it stacks up against your own personal health criteria.
Let’s take the first step today and learn which chemicals are the most important to avoid. With nearly 12,000 ingredients used today in personal care products, knowing exactly what is and is not acceptable to you can feel daunting. Resources on the web can be confusing, so I spent some time selecting the top toxic chemical ingredients to leave on the shelf.
Here’s a chart with a handy list of ingredients to look for and avoid in your personal and beauty products.
If you’re just starting out, make sure to stay away from as many of the ingredients below in products you use everyday instead of occasionally. Or, if you’re already on your way to an ALL all-natural or even organic lifestyle, avoid products with ingredients from this entire list if you haven’t already!
I guess I’ve been eating, breathing, and absorbing my fair share of PPG, titanium dioxide, and artificial fragrances. Yum!
That’s a little terrifying! Only ONE out of the 11 products I use most everyday passes the non-toxic ingredient test? I am shocked, especially with the number of products I use from brands that claim they’re ‘all natural’. Ok, ALBA.
Guess I’ve got some shopping to do!
So we’ve learned our lesson. Living well is serious business and takes a LOT of work. I promise to share the websites and brands I find with products that pass our ingredient test!
