Did you know that just like with fashion, when it comes to physical fitness, there are actually trends? That’s right. All health professionals and fitness experts will agree that any kind of exercising can help to improve your physical health and well-being. However, each year, there are areas of focus that tend to get more attention than others. Thanks to a report released by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends, we have five that will definitely play a significant role in keeping you (and those you love) in tip-top shape in 2013:
Experienced personal trainersFor the past six years, the top fitness trend has been about people looking to work with health professionals who are both educated and certified to work in the physical fitness marketplace. As a matter of fact, personal trainers are becoming so much in demand that between 2010 and 2020 projections suggest a 29 percent increase in that particular career field. As more people are committed to getting into shape, they definitely want a professional assisting them.
Children and obesity
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, obesity is an issue that affects 17 percent of children and adults within the United States. This means that approximately 12.5 million children between the ages of 2-19 are overweight. So, it makes perfect sense why the welfare of our youth is a viable health concern this year as funding is being provided for health education and considerations are being made to put physical education back into many schools.
Fitness for seniors
We’re living longer than we used to and that means that we have to be more concerned about our long-term health; especially those who are a part of the baby boomer generation. Many fitness clubs are customizing programs and classes (along with the use of their ) for older adults due to the fact that as people are preparing for retirement, that not only provides them with more free time, but it also gives them more discretionary funds to use.
One exercise focus that can strengthen your body for just about any physical activity that you want to partake in is core training. That’s because it helps to strengthen and condition the muscles in your abdomen, back and even your thorax. When you focus on working out your hips, abdomen and lower back, it provides support for your spine and thorax and that’s always beneficial. Plus, the use of foam balls and stability balls can make it convenient to do core training just about anywhere.
Employee incentive programs
Sometimes peer pressure can be a good thing. Although worker incentive programs barely entered into the Top 20 of the ACSM survey back in 2011, this year it’s in the Top 15 as it relates to being a big fitness trend. That’s because many employers are catching onto the fact that a healthy staff means high productivity, consistent attendance and lower health insurance. There are all kinds of ways to inspire employees to want to eat right and work out and for more and more companies the effort is definitely paying off.
