4 Things To Know: Artificial Sweeteners

There are some things that are unclear about artificial sweeteners, but the list below is clear.
  1. Artificial sweeteners are regulated by the FDA.
  2. Artificial sweeteners, by themselves, can not raise blood sugar levels (ref 2).
  3. Saccharin and Aspartame have been regularly studied for safety since the 1970's (ref 1).
  4. "NO clear evidence that any artificial sweetener (approved in the U.S.) causes cancer" is the official stance of the National Cancer Institute (ref 1).
  5. FDA reviewed over 100 safety studies before approving acesulfame potassium (Sweet One, Sunnett), sucralose (Splenda), and neotame (ref 1).

2. Just because the artificial sweetener won't raise blood sugar levels DOESN'T mean the food that the sweetener is in couldn't raise blood sugar.
