For you busy people out there, your snack times are a perfect opportunity to work some healthier foods into your diet without worrying about cooking and preparation. A hard-boiled egg is a great protein pick-me-up, while a handful of nuts provides you with fiber, loads of vitamins and minerals, and healthy fats that are not only good for your heart, but help keep you feeling full. Pick up some hummus and pre-chopped vegetables from the supermarket. Adopting healthy habits can take time, and it is likely you will not change your eating habits over night; making some changes to your snack foods is a great place to start.
The concept of batching is often recommended as a way to save time and do things more efficiently—it is commonly suggested for work things such as checking emails, but it can also be useful for helping busy people eat better. One of the biggest barriers to preparing healthy meals is coming home at the end of the day feeling exhausted—the last thing you feel like doing is cooking so you don’t. The take-out menus make their usual appearance, and you are having Chinese for the third time this week. A perfect solution to this problem is devoting a large chunk of time, perhaps Sunday afternoon, to preparing as much food for the week as you can. Chop up all the vegetables you will need; prepare the beans; boil the rice; make the tomato sauce for the pasta; whip up a hearty stew that can last a few meals. Make extra portions and freeze them for later. Then, during the week, all you need to do is reheat or do some quick sautéing and you are all set.

When we think of healthy eating, we often think of labor-intensive meals that must be made from scratch, with lots of preparation. Just thinking about it makes us tired and our desire to eat healthy is once again thwarted. But, it is possible to eat well without becoming a gourmet chef. Who says you have to eat fresh vegetables only—microwave ones will do just fine. You do not have to cook a chicken on your own time—buy one ready made from the supermarket; same goes for healthy sides such as sautéed vegetables. A slow cooker can be a busy person’s best culinary friend– imagines throwing some ingredients into the pot before you go to work and coming home to a delicious, hot meal.
