3 Tips to Meet Your Volunteers' Expectations

Posted Oct 06 2009 4:00pm
Meeting (and exceeding) the expectations of your volunteers is essential to successful recruitment and long-term retention.

What do volunteers expect?

Today, Idealist.org published a new post titled: Top 10 Ways to be a Successful Long-term Volunteer [in Latin America]. While the "learning how to speak Spanish" tips are not that relevant to my readers, I found some other tips that I really like:
  • Be honest with yourself about what type of environment you can work in
  • Match your existing skills and interests with the work that the organization is doing
  • Hit the ground running, but cut yourself some slack at the same time.
This got me thinking... If these tips are top-of-mind with our most successful and long term volunteers when they enter our organizations, than we have to ask: Do we have positions that meet the expectations of our volunteers we are recruiting?

In general, volunteers want to ( actually, they EXPECT TO ):
  1. Be in a warm, fun and welcoming environment
  2. Utilize their skills and strength to get real work done
  3. Make a difference right away
Understanding your volunteers'NEEDS helps get them in the door. Meeting your volunteers' expectations keeps them coming back.
