3 Dimensional Movement…

Posted Sep 25 2010 12:00am

Humans are designed to move through 3 planes (or dimensions) of movement.  We flex, extend and rotate in the frontal plane , sagittal plane , and transverse plane naturally.  Unfortunately, many fitness programs promote the lion’s share of exercises in only 2 of the three planes because they are much easier to teach, and in worse case scenarios, there are machines that do the work for the individual.    With most exercises coming from frontal and sagittal plane movements, we tend to have problems with rotation, especially when applying force while rotating such as in a direction change, or throwing exercise.  In daily activity, we rotate, flex and extend simultaneously quite often (getting in and out of a car, chair, stocking groceries, etc) so it is important to train such movements.  To keep this post short, I am going to include a few videos which show how we can add rotation or combination exercises into a training routine…

There are plenty more on my you tube channel, and more to come.  I would like to see some of the drills that you are doing as well.  Please feel to share in the comments section so that others can learn from you.
