This morning was the 2nd running of the Newport Pell Bridge Run. My dad and I ran it last year and my mom ended up joining us this year.
Being the second year they were able to tweak some of the issues they had last year: not enough port-o-potties, weird finish line just behind the Citizen’s Bank (how fitting!), etc. And my parents were able to get the race rate at the Marriott hotel which happened to be where the shuttles left from and where the finish line was. So no having to get up at 4AM; this year we were able to get up at 5:15 and jump right on the shuttle at 5:45.
What was the same this year was the perfect weather. When I checked my phone at 5:30, it said that the temperature was 50* and partly sunny. That would allow for us to wait around for 30 minutes and not have to bulk up to keep warm and then risk having to shed along the course (or stay super warm). This year I wore capri pants and the long sleeve cotton tee for the race and I was perfectly warm the whole time.
Backing up: The night before, my parents and I dined at the Brick Alley Pub in downtown Newport. I swear, if I could afford it, I would move to Newport in a heartbeat. It’s such a beautiful quaint town. The restaurant was very busy but because our wonderful concierge called ahead of time our wait was only about 25 to 30 minutes. We had some beers as we waited for our table. To start, we shared the chicken tenders with BBQ sauce. The portion was small but they were oh so flavorful. Our entrees even came with the salad bar so I had a garden salad with cucumbers, celery, kidney beans and 1000 Island dressing. For an entree I had the fresh tomato penne with chicken. The dish came with shaved mozzarella on top, stewed and sun-dried tomatoes and a side of broccoli (a side of your choice). I was so full from the chicken, salad and Guinness that I was only able to eat about a quarter of the dish. It was delicious though. And our server was great.
Back to the race: My mom and I lined up at the 10 minute mile marker and my dad was a little bit further up. It started right at 6:30 and the sun was just coming over the horizon. The crowd was a bit heavy at the beginning and we were weaving around walkers and other runners. I made sure to conserve what I had so that I could make it over the bridge without stopping. My mom and I stayed together for just about a mile. When we got 1/4 of the way up the bridge I was just chugging along and keeping my head down. By the time I got to the top of the bridge, I had lost her. Thankfully the momentum of the downhill kept me going and with about a quarter mile left in the race, I sprinted. About 30 seconds later, there was my mom. She didn’t stop either!!
