Yesterday did not quite go as planned, but it was still a good day. I had planned on getting up at 5am, having breakfast, doing my regular pre-run stuff and then heading out to run 18 miles.
That didn’t happen. It was pouring rain all morning. Sure I could have gone out anyway, but why? Running in the rain makes me miserable. A light sprinkling of rain? No problem. Downpour? No thanks. So I did other things (like prepare for my Grocery Challenge which you can see below) and waited for the rain to stop.
It finally stopped around 2pm. Now, you may remember that I ran in the afternoon last week and it was terrible. My stomach felt awful and my legs felt heavy. I decided to give it a go anyhow. I finally got going at around 3pm.
Miles 1-4 were good. The sun was just starting to show (now that the rainclouds were finally leaving!) Around mile 4 my back started to KILL ME. A horrific knot decided to show up and put me to the test. I kept going. Miles 4-8 were rough and I tried to not remind myself that I still had 10 more to go!
Miles 8-14 were probably the worst. I ran on a few different trails and around some city blocks as well and these miles were in the sunniest locations so I was warm and uncomfortable. I had plenty of water on my fuel belt and stashed in some bushes, but I was still so warm. Oh and did I mention my back felt even worse?
Miles 14-18 were pretty good. My legs felt amazing but my back still kind of hurt. I stopped and stretched a few times but it still ached. As lame as this sounds I really had to dig deep to finish this run. My body felt like it was just not cooperating. But I made deals with myself – I would run for 3 songs straight and then I could walk – but after 3 songs I would decide that I could make it 3 more songs. And so on.
I finished 18 miles in about 3:10 – I am beyond happy that I FINISHED and that I ran close to 10 min/miles. As soon as I got home I made a big protein shake and then I took my first ice bath:

IT WAS AWFUL but it made my knees, hip and back feel so much better. I will definitely be doing that after my long runs from now on.
May Grocery Challenge
I spend a good amount of money on food each month. Back when we started budgeting a few years ago, I was shocked to see that we were spending $700+ on food each month (that includes restaurant food, booze, toiletries, plus regular grocery food) – I thought that was ridiculous. Up until now, we have been budgeting $400 to use for all of those items. I want to see if we can do better, but to still focus on nutrition and whole foods.
My challenge to myself (and to you if you want to join me) is to use only $100 per person per month for food. So for us, that means $200/month.
This money is for FOOD only – not restaurant food (which we are budgeting $100 for the whole month) or toiletries.
We can use the food we have already bought (which I will be taking an inventory later today and will show you pictures tomorrow) – that way you can see where we’re starting from.
I’m hoping to learn more about looking for sales, deals, coupons, etc through this experience, as well as getting more creative in the kitchen! I want to calculate how much my meals are costing us. That way we can make smarter decisions.
(Also, from time to time – but quite rarely lately – I receive free stuff through the blog. I will let you know when that happens and when I use those items)
