13.1 Non Race Miles

Gosh I almost broke up with running this morning……….Almost.

Running and I have not been connecting lately.  Runs don’t feel so great.  The excitement of the run has been waning and honestly sometimes I think of doing other things :)

Running has also been causing me some aches and pains which I need to fix.

But this morning, regardless of all of that I laced up my shoes and put on my new compression socks and ran a little over 6 miles by myself and then met my friend Marianna for another 6 or so miles for a total of a little over 13 miles.

While I was running, I started asking myself why I had not wanted to race this morning .  And I realized a few things:

This last year has been the first real year that I felt like I went from being a jogger to a full-fledged runner.  I had a lot of firsts too:

My first half marathon.

My first trail race.

My first 5K PR.

A 10K PR .

A half marathon the day after I raced a 10K.

My first 43 mile week.

Many firsts that are exciting.  Nothing like running a half for the first time just to see what you will feel like.  Nothing like wondering how fast you can go in a 5K.  Nothing like wondering how far you can push your body by racing consecutive days.

Lots of fun firsts.  

And now running has gotten a bit humdrum.  I know what it feels like to race a half-now I am too worried about my pace and having to PR.

So as I was running I realized I have got to back up a bit and remember why Running and I fell in love in the first place.

To be alone with your thoughts.

To breathe some salty air.

To challenge myself on a trail.

To be in the moment.

To race a fast race.

To race a slow race.

And to just RUN.

 

Yup……thats what I have forgotten.
