A major New Year's resolution for most health-conscious people is to detox--to purify, fast, cleanse, and what have you. But according to the Chief Scientist of the UK's Food Standards Agency, Andrew Wadge, detox diets are generally a waste of time and energy. According to Wadge, all it takes is one or two glasses of water, exercise, and home-cooked meals to feel good. Wadge says that the liver is its own efficient detox mechanism, so the very idea of needing to detox with external supplements or methods is a bunch of bunk.
I agree in general that a lot of purported detox diets are probably pretty useless in the long run, but given the fact that we live in environments that are often full of harmful contaminants, I still find it hard to believe that our bodies can get the maximum cleanse without resorting to other means. I know there's been a lot of controversy over detox methods, but what do other people think?
