Wintry Mix Workouts. Burn Holiday Pounds in the Snow!

Snow definitely slows things down, but it doesn’t have to slow down your fitness routine, especially if you’re trying to burn a few of those holiday calories. Here are a few ways to take advantage of your snowy neighborhood to get in your daily exercise.
Most city dwellers don’t have snowshoes, but you can still get an awesome calorie burning workout by simply walking in the snow. In fact, it requires you to exert more energy because you have to watch your balance (use your abs!) and lift your legs high to traverse the deep snow. Take a pair of ski poles to engage the upper body.
Want to get out some pent up anger? Grab a friend and start a snow ball fight. Talk about a killer cardio exercise–running around in the snow and dodging snow balls. You’ll probably burn even more calories laughing; there’s no better way to act like a kid than to play in the snow. Just be sure to make some ground rules (i.e. aim below the waist) to avoid poking someone’s eye out.
There’s probably no better way to work up a sweat than shoveling. You can combine cardio and resistance training in one. CalorieCount.com says you can burn 408 calories in one hour if you shovel by hand. Think of it as doing bent over rows at the gym or bi-cep curls. Remember to bend over at the knees and squeeze your glutes when you push the snow to avoid compensating with your lower back.
