Why is there caffeine in soft drinks?

Posted by Shez B.

Manufacturers claim that caffeine is added to drinks in order to enhance the flavour. However, studies reveal that this may not be the case. Researchers in Australia proved that in taste tests, individuals were unable to distinguish between caffeinated and uncaffeinated beverages.

Researches believe the real reason that caffeine is added to soft drinks is perhaps because it can provide a bit of a 'boost', and therefore cause soft drinks to be quite addictive. Dr Russell Keast, one of the authors of the study is calling for the Australian Government to consider banning the sale of caffeinated soft drinks to under-18s, since caffeine can cause many biochemical changes.

I would have to agree that caffeine is added for it's addictive qualities. I can't imagine that soda would have sold nearly as well as it does without this type of boost. Otherwise, fake juices would sell just as well as a soda, don't you think? That's interesting about the Australians considering banning soda to anyone under 18. I'm thrilled that there has been a movement in American schools to ban soda vending machines. It's time for our country to get healthy!
Coca Cola is so named because it use to have cocaine in it for the drugs addictive qualities. While cocaine was obviously banned from soft drink formulas, I'm sure that caffeine substituted.
