Why Aren't More People Cooking...is it because kitchens are too big?

Has anyone noticed that given the current economy, a lot of your neighbors still don't cook at home? Most eat out or just do take out, but they don't actually cook a meal in their kitchens.
I didn't give it much thought until the other day when I went to drop off something at a neighbor's house. She invited me to stay for coffee so we sat at the dinette table chatting. The whole time I sat there, I thought, I wish my kitchen was as big as this kitchen. The kitchen was huge with a center island, lots of counter and cabinet space, large refrigerator and stove. It was a kitchen that I could only dream about.
The funny thing is, my neighbor doesn't cook in her kitchen. Actually, all but maybe six of my neighbors (that might be a high number) really cook in their kitchen. What's funnier, the few neighbors who cook, have a kitchen exactly like mine.
So, here I am with my 10 x 10 galley kitchen and although it may not be my dream kitchen, it works for me. Anyway, I've gotten accustomed to only having to take a couple of steps to get from the stove to the sink.
