where to eat this weekend: Outdoors – before summer’s end.

Posted Aug 26 2010 2:46pm

Summer’s coming to a close, sadly, so take advantage of the awesome weather and grab some grub under the stars or sun.  Here are our recommendations for great food destinations that feature outdoor seating, New York scene and plenty of healthy options.   Tell us your favorite outdoor spots, and we’ll add them to our itinerary.

Gemma (Bowery Hotel, 335 Bowery)

An outdoor patio at Gemma compliments the Italian-influenced menu of small plates and entrees.  I like the Three Bean & Red Pepper Crostini; Watermelon, Cucumber, Pine Nuts & Ricotta Salad; and Roasted Branzino with Green Beans.

Hester Street Fair (Hester Street & Essex Street, open Saturdays & Sundays thru Dec.)

Sometimes I like to add a little excercise to my eating, so hitting up Hester Street Fair is perfect.  I’m partial to the Sigmund Pretzel Shop stand, and its fresh, organic and soft big pretzels.  My buddy Daniel Holzman from The Meatball Shop was doing some awesome artisinal flavored ices, and Luke’s Lobster has one heck of a meaty lobster roll without an overwelming dose of mayo.

Mercadito  (175 Avenue B)

Southern Mexican at its best.  Fresh ingredients, bold sauces and bright flavors make Mercadito one of my favorite restaurants in NYC.  It also helps that their sidewalk dining offers a great vantage point for people watching.  My keep-it-healthy menu recommendations: all the ceviches and the tacos de pollo.
