Where’d you go?

Posted Oct 15 2010 10:33am

Whoa. Has it really been 5 days since I’ve posted? I’m here, I swear!

I’ve just been drowning in school/life busy. It’s not as bad as it sounds- it just means that blogging has had to take a backseat. This segues nicely into my next topic:

How to live in college and not go crazy

I’m a fairly organized person and its still taken me years to discover how to efficiently live my life.

Yes, that sounds ridiculous. But when you’re trying to juggle school work/a social life/other various responsibilities, it can become challenging. I just want to share some tips on how I keep my life organized & feel free to add some of your own :)

1.) Buy a planner.

It will be the best $7 you ever spent. Once you have one, do the following:

  • Go through all of your class schedules and write in due dates for assignments.
  • Write in all of your meetings/appointments (even if you *think* you’ll remember that thing you do every Thursday night…just write it in anyways).
  • If you have a workout schedule, write it in. However, distinguish it by writing in a different color or putting it at the bottom.

Here’s what my planner looks like:

^ All of my assignment due dates + half-marathon training schedule at the bottom. My exams are highlighted (that’s going to be one hell of a Thursday/Friday…)

As I finish an assignment, I cross the due date off…

Out of sight. Out of mind. No more worrying about it.

2.) Have goals for the day.

I put my goals on a dry-erase board:

^that’s for today. After I hit “publish” I can erase my goal to post!

3.) Cook in large quantities.

Here’s the way I approach meal-planning:

  • Prepare a meal with many servings. If it has a ton of servings, I’ll freeze a portion of it.
  • Have a lot of produce & condiments on hand.
  • If I don’t have the time to cook, I’ll either eat the prepared meal or get creative with my produce/condiments.
  • If I do have the time to cook, then cook! …and freeze any extra portions

Here’s the inside of my freezer:

Game #1: What’s wrong with this picture?

Answer: There’s a shirt in the freezer.

It’s my shirt actually haha. I got gum stuck in it and read somewhere that if you stick the shirt in the freezer, the gum will harden and be easier to peel off. Does anyone else know how to get gum out of shirts?! :(

Game #2: Which foods are Danielle’s?!

Answer: Mine are kind of hidden…

My roommates so graciously let me have a little corner for my tupperware while they fill the rest with their Costco-sized bags of ground beef and waffles. Thanks guys.

4.) Always make time for fun.

Enjoyment should never be optional. If you look at your life in the big picture: what’s your purpose of being here?

To experience. To mingle with other people. To enjoy.

If you leave that part out…then you’re not really living your life. Am I right?

So if you’re a little more organized and get your work done efficiently, there should be no reason you can’t go out and have a little fun :)

These 4 organization tips bring my stress level down a ton. Hence why I’m able to get all my work done, train for races, eat well, socialize, and get through college without going crazy. Do you have any tips to add?
