What's the Truth About Soy Products?

Posted by Georg S.

As a vegetarian, I eat a lot of soy products, such as tofu, tofu burgers, and soy milk. Although I've often heard that soy foods are really beneficial to your health, I also hear that they could cause health problems. What's the truth about soy products?

Soy foods are a good choice . Soy foods are a good choice because they're high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and polyunsaturated fat (the good fat). Soy is also a good source of protein and a great alternative to meat, which is high in saturated fat (the bad fat). This kind of diet, especially when it includes lots of fruits and veggies, is good for heart health and there is even some evidence that soy may help prevent some kinds of cancer. The bottom line is that soy is not going to hurt you and is a great part of any balanced diet.
As with many health claims, the benefits of soy may have been overstated. As with many health claims, the benefits of soy may have been overstated. But the truth about soy products is simple - as long as you aren't allergic to soy, you can't go wrong by including them in your diet.
Phytoestrogens are the problem. The issue with soy is that it contains phytoestrogens, which are plant estrogens that mimic human estrogens. If you consume high levels of phytoestrogens, you may experience negative health effects, and possibly be at higher risk for certain kinds of cancer. This is all still somewhat controversial, but as with anything, it's probably a good idea to eat soy in moderation. It's not a bad idea to perhaps find other sources of vegetarian protein and use almond milk instead of soy milk sometimes to mix it up on occasion.
Soy is not recommended if you have thyroid disorder. If you google the words "soy" & "thyroid" you will find many articles about this. Apparently, the isoflavones disrupt normal hormone function, including the production of T3 & T4.
In moderation - - . They work fine. I did some reading on soy products and my understanding is that they are a healthy food. However, they need to be consumed in moderation. I guess the bottom line is that they need to be part of a balanced diet.
