What keeps you from eating that 2nd slice of pizza or grabbing another cookie? Specifically, I am talking about those times when you decide it is pizza night for the family and you are fine with it because you tell yourself that you will only have one slice and maybe some fruit or a salad, but are hearing the 2nd or 10th slice calling you for more! What ultimately keeps you on the right path?
Ability to Predict the Future. Nothing is wrong with splurging once in awhile -- I do it about once a week, some times twice, rarely thrice.
The key is to look ahead and see what the result will be in a couple of days or more. And, realizing that you can easily justify your actions and make it "okay" to have that second, third or fourth piece of pizza.
But, don't get to moody about it if you did cross your boundary -- realize the irrationality of it and next time only have two or three pieces.
To keep the sanity think in futures, what will be the result be if I eat this fifth piece of pizza? Yikes!!!
Not eating that stuff in the first place. That's the best way to avoid overdoing it. Junk food containing excess fat, sugar, and additives can have an addictive effect on people, myself included. I've also found that when I eat things like wheat, milk, yeast, and other things I'm allergic/sensitive to, the allergic-addictive cycle is set into motion and there's little I can do after that. The cravings are simply too strong. If it's a real problem for you even after avoiding junk food, I'd suggest having a food sensitivity test done. They can really be life changing. Go for the ELISA test, which analyzes only delayed reactions. You can figure out the foods that make you sick immediately without a test by the way you feel right after eating them.
Pizza Rocks!. If you order pizza out. Try ordering a smaller pizza. You can't be tempted by what isn't there. When the pizza arrives put it in the kitchen and put your slice onto a plate along with your salad and go eat in the dining room. Don't put it on the table in front of you. No sense in torturing yourself. Or you could make a healthier version at home. I use pizza crust mix. It's about 50 cents, then add my own healthy toppings. It doesn't take long and it tastes great. As far as other junk food goes. I try to think of how lousy I'm going to feel both physically and mentally afterwards if I over eat.
I can't really give into temptation anymore.... ...because I don't have a way to justify it. When you start eating healthy, you start feeling better, physically and emotionally. Although stuff like pizza and ice cream can be addictive, all I need to do is remember how icky I feel after indulging, compared to how I do when I eat a healthy, balanced yet delicious meal--and it's enough to turn me off. My skin also has a tendency to break out when I eat junk (contrary to what most dermatologists say about foods not affecting your skin), so beauty considerations are definitely enough to keep me from straying. :)
