We Can't Say It's Cheese Review

Posted Jan 29 2010 5:10pm
The totally groovy people at Wayfare Foods sent us this assortment of vegan cheese alternatives. The spreads and dips come in 4 flavors; Cheddar-style Spread, Hickory-smoked Cheddar-style Spread, Cheddar-style Dip, and Mexi Cheddar-style Dip. They aren't certified gluten-free, but they are all made with oats (and none of my gluten-sensitive ones react to oats of any kind). The ingredients that make up these terrific cheesy goodies are incredibly simple; sea salt, beans, sesame, coconut oil, olive oil, nutritional yeast, and evaporated cane juice. (I know some of you are thinking that these aren't all low oxalate ingredients, and you are right. However, the tiny amount that makes up a serving doesn't seem to bother any of us...hurray!)

I set all 4 containers out for the "wolves" (as I call them) to taste test. ;-) Dd24 was here with the Little Princess so everyone got to try them. BTW...I haven't introduced you all to my dd24. She's our culinary school student and her name is Lili. She was very impressed with the spreads and dip, particularly the Mexi Cheddar flavor and the Hickory-Smoked.

As I'm sure you can see, Wubba was equally impressed. Izzy ate more than anybody. The spreads would be great on crackers and sandwiches. The dips are fabulous dips but would also make some awesome Chili-cheese fries! Everyone seemed to have a preference for one flavor or another. Those who like strong flavors chose the cumin-laden goodness of the Mexi dip and the smoky Hickory (Wubba said that one reminded him of the kinds of cheese he and Papa Bear used to eat at holidays). My cheese-lovin' and cheese missin' Misha and Livy liked the more mild Cheddar-style spread and Cheddar-style dip. The hubs liked all of the varieties, as did I.

The Little Princess dug it straight out of the container on baby carrots. =) All in all we really enjoyed these cheese alternatives. I couldn't be happier. We don't like giving the kids soy and all manner of funky ingredients so We Can't Say It's Cheese was a refreshing change from so many other cheese alternatives that we've seen and tried. Though I was prepared to tell you all the positive and negative aspects of We Can't Say It's Cheese, I really cannot think of anything negative to say other than the fact that the products are not certified gluten free and that they are probably high in oxalates. Neither of those things may be a problem for you. Neither is a major problem for us. When we want something cheesy we'll be ordering some We Can't Say It's Cheese!
