When I'm at home, I eat a pretty simple, healthy diet. But on my last vacation, all rules went out the window! Croissants with butter at breakfast, dessert with dinner every night, wine during a late lunch, bread anytime, all of these things and more became part of my routine for ten days. Thankfully, I was also biking for about 70km each day, so I didn't come home looking like the Michelin man. But if you plan to take a more leisurely vacation and want to keep the diet in check at the same time, here's a few tips:
1. In the air, keep healthy snacks on hand, airline restrictions considering. A sandwich on whole wheat bread, apples, bananas, carrots, whole grain crackers, and unsalted nuts are all good options, as long as you store them in sealed containers. Due to security restrictions, you still can't bring your own water, but be sure to buy a large bottle once you get past security.
2. You don't have to totally skip dessert, just keep things in check. Split your dessert with your travel buddy, eat as many vegetables as possible, and limit portion size if your main course is super-rich.
3. Walk amongst your surroundings. Save the tour busses for the blue-hairs, and seek out opportunities to hike, bike, swim, and otherwise enjoy the fresh air at your destination spot.
4. Go easy on the daiquiris. Margaritas, Mojitos, and frozen daiquiris sure do seem nice when lounging by the pool, but they also pack on serious calories! An occasional splurge is fine, but if you must indulge, wine and light beer are two of the lowest calorie choices.
5. Make it count. Enjoy local favorites with zero guilt, and leave the junk in the mini bar for someone else.
