Woman Stretching in Bed with a Man Sleeping Beside Her Americans today are trying to accomplish more on less sleep and it’s causing costly mistakes at work and home, frustration and fatigue that haunt us on a daily basis. It’s time to get serious about finding ways to get a restful night’s sleep. Here are some helpful tips on how to sleep better and wake up ready to face the day:

  • The power of napping. Power naps can provide just the amount of rest you need to relax your mind and body during the day so that you can relieve stress and get a better night’s sleep stress. There are even tutorials about how to power-nap online.
  • Solve problems during sleep. It’s been proven that problems can be solved during a good night’s sleep. Think heavily about your problem or dilemma for a few moments and then do everything you can to put it out of your mind. When a good night’s sleep ensues, you’ll wake up more able to sort out the issues and find an answer.
  • Exercise! A few minutes of exercise during the day can go a long way to help you sleep better at night. Never exercise just before you hit the sack – unless you choose sex as an exercise. Sex relaxes the mind and body and helps you get to sleep easier.
  • Visualize. If you’re having trouble getting to sleep, keep in mind that one method for how to sleep better involves visualizing ‘pictures’ that relax you. You may also benefit from soft, nature noises from one of the many ‘sleep-enhancing’ machines available. Aromatherapy is also a great sleep enhancer.
  • Avoid the usual alarm clocks. Alarm clocks that give you rude awakenings can leave you feeling like you didn’t get enough sleep and also frustrated and angry that you were awakened from a deep sleep with a clang or buzz. Many alarm clocks offer delightful nature sounds and a light that gradually becomes brighter over the minutes before waking.
  • Eat or drink a sleep-inducer. We may have all tried warm milk, chamomile tea and know about the sleep-inducing traits found in turkey. But, there other foods that enhance sleep such as oatmeal, whole-wheat bread, potatoes and bananas. How to sleep better has often included alcohol to relax. But, alcohol may make you feel sleepy at first, but when the effects wear off in the middle of the night, you may get a sugar rush that keeps you awake.
  • Give up computers and television just before bed time. The flickering of the screen lights on computers and television are stimulators to the brain and may keep you awake longer after bed time.

Sleep deprivation is a very real problem to Americans. Work productivity is lost from sleepy employees who can’t concentrate and are more apt to make mistakes. Learning how to sleep better is a process that we should all take seriously and try new ways to combat our sleepless nights, so that we can wake up renewed, refreshed, and revived each and every day!
