Tips not to overindulge

Posted by Lara I.

I am headed to New Orleans this weekend, where I am sure I will be partaking in quite a bit of food and alcohol. Any tips on how not to overindulge in either once inhibitions are lowered?

Order half a meal. I recently saw this done at a restaurant in Denver, Colorado. They actually offered half-portions for a lower price. Although the price may not change, perhaps ask the waiter if you could have a half-portion of whatever you order, and perhaps vegetables on the side to make up the rest. But at the same time, don't stress about food on your trip. You may overindulge once or twice, but if you live a healthy lifestyle everyday, those days when you do and try something different won't really take you that far off course. When I was in Denver, I lived by that idea. Any weight I gained melted right off as I got back into my routine. Have fun! New Orleans is a great city!
Use a TO GO box. When you order your meal ask for a to go box to come with the meal. When the meal comes put the excess food inside and close the lid. If it's not on your plate you aren't as likely to eat it. It should also help with alcohol consumption as you won't be as likely to linger over your half finished plates of food. Have a great trip!
Eat a salad beforehand.. Before your meal, order a green salad, which will ensure you have your daily dose of greens and will make it less likely that you'll overindulge. Also, drinking two glasses of water prior to your meal will also create the feeling of fullness. Carry lots of healthy munchables with you throughout the day, as well: nuts, chopped carrots, berries, trail mix, and other natural treats.
