As I confessed a few days ago, I used to be a diet junkie. I have tried Sugar Busters, South Beach, Atkins, Weight Watchers, The Master Cleanse, 3-Day Juice Cleanses and the list goes on.
Before my health coaching days, I kept searching for the magic bullet diet that would help me finally take the weight off.
As I tried each diet, without success, I kept thinking, “What’s wrong with me? Am I not exercising enough? Do I not have enough will power?” I would lose a few pounds and then gain them right back. I became obsessed with Weight Watchers Points, to the point where I did not want to go out to eat or to anyone's home because I would not know exactly how many points I would consume.
One night, I sat at the kitchen table in front of a beautiful meal that I had cooked. As I counted my calories, I realized that I could only eat a very small portion of this delicious and healthy meal.
After eating my allotted portion, I stared at my empty plate. I was still starving, and on the verge of tears. I love food and all this dieting was zapping my joy for one of my most favorite things.
I was supposed to be enjoying a night with my family, but all I could think about was how hungry I was. So sad!
I would go to bed hungry hoping that the scale would budge in the morning. Only to wake up disappointed that discouraged that I had not lost weight. I had not quite figured out that the # on the scale did not determine my beauty or worth.
I hated dieting, but more than that, I hated my body.
What I didn’t know at the time is that food sensitivities were actually causing me to hold onto weight.
