Our team run wasn’t terrible at all. It just included a HUGE hill!!
Plus, Mal came up with this clever post title and was really proud of himself, so I decided to use it.
Bright and early this morning, Mal and I met our team and headed out for 8 miles around South Boston. Our route included a few miles around Castle Island, which somehow I never managed to visit during the 6 months that I lived in Southie. (Apparently, I lived under a rock during that time.) Castle Island is such a cool place to run. Then, we did a loop around West Broadway to Summer Street and East Broadway and back to West Broadway.
My iPhone was acting a little weird/not working on my run, so I had a little fun editing the pictures for this post.

Mal and I and our new running buddy, Nick, started out together and ran the first 3 miles together at a 8:30-9:00 pace. Once Mal was warmed-up, he took off and left us in his dust.

I trucked along at a 9-minute pace for the next mile before facing the biggest, steepest hill ever on G Street. Let’s just say, I was not prepared to run up it. I ran about half way before walking and catching my breath, and then tackled the rest of the hill with a very slow jog to the top. This hill was definitely a challenge for me and I finished mile 5 in 9:57. I sort of struggled through the final 3 miles of the run, but I finished strong at the end.
- Mile 1: 8:36
- Mile 2: 8:50
- Mile 3: 8:55
- Mile 4: 8:45
- Mile 5: 9:57
- Mile 6: 9:08
- Mile 7: 9:15
- Mile 8: 8:59

Mal’s recap:
8 miles: (7:46 pace, 1:02) Had the usual pre-run PB&B sandwich and a half cup of iced coffee this morning. We did an 8 mile run and practiced on some hillier terrain. Around mile 4 or 5 we hit G street in Southie, which is a STEEP hill. I like pushing myself on hills as a way to get a little something more out of the run. I find that I am able to keep a faster pace by staying on my toes as I run up the hill. I feel like doing this is easier than landing on heels and using my whole foot to push off. Using this strategy I was able to maintain a 7:02 pace up the hill, which was tiring but rewarding. Overall, I was happy with this run. Once I was done with the warmup, I was able to keep negative splits for the most part (8:30, 8:50, 9:08, 7:18, 7:14, 7:01, 7:08, 7:02).

Once everything on our team finished the run, we headed to breakfast at the Boston Beer Garden .

After running 8 miles, I was ready to eat! I ordered the Three Eggs (over medium) with home fries, bacon, and toast, and I pretty much ate the entire thing.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), the Boston Beer Garden didn’t have iced coffee, so Mal, Nick, and I stopped at P.S. Gourmet for our morning fix. I ordered the butterscotch flavor this morning. Mmm!

Mal and I are doing some shopping today. See ya!
