The Power Of Vinegar - Many Uses You Didn't Know About

One of the most used products my Mama used was vinegar. She used it mainly to clean the tile floors and mirrors, but did you know that vinegar has more uses that simply salad dressing?

Instead of using many of the toxic substances available in shops today, consider using a natural product such as vinegar. You’ll be amazed just as I was with this list.

1. Get rid of annoying fruit flies

Nothing is more annoying that fruit flies in your home. The main culprit for these flying insects are ripened fruit but instead of avoiding the purchase of deliciously, healthy fruits use vinegar instead. Using white or apple cider vinegar, pour some into a bowl or glass jar. We used a bowl and covered the bowl with plastic wrap. Poking a few holes into the plastic wrap was helpful in trapping the flies in the bowl and removed the flies from our counters. It works!

2. Disinfect cutting boards

Simply apply white vinegar onto any cutting board or butcher block cutting board and wipe clean. Not only will it disinfect against bacteria from meats and seafood but it will save the integrity of the board. This is a wonderful alternative to dishwasher detergent which will weaken surfaces and wood fibers.

3. Freshen and clean your fruits and vegetables

To freshen wilted vegetables and clean the wax off of fruits simply soak in your kitchen sink with 2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar.

4. Say good-bye to ants

Add some full strength white vinegar to a spray bottle. Simply spray the vinegar around door frames, under appliances and windows and say good-bye to ants.

5. Clean the garbage disposal

Clean and deodorize the garbage disposal by making vinegar ice cubes and dropping them down the disposal. After grinding down the vinegar ice cubes, follow up by running cold water through and you’re left with a clean smelling garbage disposal.

6. Keep your stainless steel and chrome shiny

Simply dampen a cloth with white vinegar and wipe down. Not only will it remove sticky, dirty spots it will leave a shine behind.

7. Freshen up your fridge

Freshen up your fridge with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. You can use the solution to wash the interior and exterior of the fridge.

8. Wipe away mildew

Use full strength vinegar to wipe away heavy mildew stains. Mix it with water to clean light mildew stains. You can even use a vinegar mist in a spray bottle to prevent mildew stains from forming in rugs and carpets.

9. Weed killer

This is something I had my husband test out since he does all the outdoors work. Instead of using the dangerous pesticides, he applied full strength vinegar on the weeds. It is not only less expensive but it is non-toxic as well and it works!

10. Keep your car windows frost – free

Coat the windows the night before with a solution of 3 parts vinegar to 1 part vinegar. It works!

11. Clean dirt off PCs and electronics

Your computer, printer, fax machine, and other home office gear will work better if you keep them clean and dust-free. Turn off your machine and wipe down with a mix of equal parts white vinegar and water. Be sure to use a cloth, or cotton swabs for tight spaces, never use a spray bottle.

12. Get rid of smoke odor

Smoky odors from either burning your toast or cigaretter smell can truly make your house unbearable. Remove the lingering smoky odor by placing a shallow bowl about three-quarters full of white or cider vinegar in the room where the scent is strongest. To get the smell out of the air, moisten a cloth and wave it in the air.

13. Unglue stickers, decals, and price tags

Use full-strength white vinegar and gently scrape it off the product. Use an expired credit card to scrape. You can also use this solution to get glue off of glass, plastic and walls.

14. Remove carpet stains

For light stains, mix 2 tablespoons salt with ½ cup white vinegar. Rub into the stain, let try and vacuum.

For tough, ground-in dirt and other stains, make a paste of 1 tablespoon vinegar with 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and rub it into the stain using a dry cloth. Let it set for two days, then vacuum.

15. Cure an upset belly

Next time you are suffering from an upset stomach, drink 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar mixed into 1 cup of water. This is one of my mom’s remedies and you never argue with your mom.

16. Control your dandruff

After shampooing your hair, rinse your hair with a mixture of 2 cups apple cider vinegar and 2 cups cold water.

17. Ease sunburn and itching

Gently rub a sunburn or rash with cotton balls or a soft cloth soaked with white or cider vinegar. Try to apply this before the sunburn begins to sting. You can use this to help treat insect bites or rashes from poison ivy or poison oak.

18. Soothe a sore throat

Put 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. Gargle and then swallow.

19. Freshen up your washing machine

Once a month pour 1 cup of vinegar into the washing machine and run the machine through one cycle without clothes. This process will clean the hoses and unclog the accumulated soap scum.

20. Clean a scorched iron plate

Heat equal parts of vinegar and salt in a small pan. Rub the solution on to a cooled iron surface to remove dark or burned stains.

Did you ever imagine you can use simple white vinegar or apple cider vinegar for something other than salad? Try some of these solutions and not only find more uses for it than you ever imagined but also save money in the process. Who doesn’t like saving money?
