The Buddy System

Posted by Jane D.

I've been working in restaurants since I was old enough to serve liquor and it took me three years not to eat the french-fries that fell off the plates. (I'm a potato addict). But even after that I struggled. I LOVE a bargain. All bargains. And if I get free food when I work I MUST ACCEPT. It's FREE! But 'The Spaghetti Factory' doesn't really lend itself to svelt-ness. Neither do Bar and Grills, Irish Pubs, Fine Dining Euro-Bistros'. As a matter of fact, the more expensive the food is that Im getting for free, the more I feel I must accept. Not all people feel this way, however, and they have saved me. If I get my free food and GIVE half of it away nothing is going to waste and I feel chipper and generous. (pathetic I know) I also then feel that I have eaten decadently without feeling guilty that I've over-eaten or chosen poorly. For many of us, portion control is all we are really grappling with. So, let's try a buddy system. Wherever you usually go for lunch, pick some place a little nicer. Take a like-minded friend, and split an entr'e. At many places (especially nicer places), the kitchen will usually do this for you. Chances are this meal will be a nice change of pace a treat even? If you have an hour for lunch, plan to spend that whole hour. Eat slowly. Enjoy your food. Keep the conversation going. And, as an added bonus, splitting the tab with a friend will probably cost you less than eating on your own.
