Taste the flavours of the Mediterranean...

Have you been swimming in the Mediterranean Sea? Played in the sunshine along the coast line and then dined on fresh, hydrating salads made from local ingredients?

 One of my favourite places I visited...Cinque Terre on the Med Coast in Italy....love.

I passionately remember my experience doing so! In 2003 I spent 6 months backpacking Europe alone (although to be fair, I met that many amazing people that I was rarely alone or certainly not lonely!). I ate salads piled high with fresh cucumber, onion and tomato in Greece, basil galore in Italy, beetroot in France, fresh corn in Croatia and well, let's just say my taste buds were extremely happy travelling through the regions bordering the Mediterranean sea. As was my body for all the alkaline sunshine and constant walking (yes there was plenty of alcohol at the time to counter that!), my heart and soul for the freedom of choosing each and every moment to do as they desire, my mind for the education and first hand hand experience of new cultures and history, and also for the alertness required to travel safely alone.

My memories of the Mediterranean conjure up nothing up but pleasure, and last night, I conjured up a salad which brought the tastes of those times to my home in little Perth. And yes, pleasure ensued!

This salad is full of fresh, simple, easy to find ingredients that are hydrating, alkalising and downright yummy! The vegetables speak for themselves in this meal, so the dressing is extremely simple and all that is needed to complement the vegetables.

Mediterranean Salad Medley


2 ears of fresh corn, corn cut from the cob
1/2 red onion, diced
1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved (I used raw sweet potato cubes instead as that's what I hand on hand but I recommend tomato)
1 handful of fresh basil leaves, chopped
1 handful of fresh dill, chopped
1 beetroot, peeled and chopped
1/2 cucumber, peeled and chopped
Juice of half a lemon
Juice of half a lime (or use just lemon or lime and use 1 whole fruit)
Black pepper and sea salt to taste


Place all ingredients into a bowl and toss. Crunch away while dreaming of sunshine, salt water and beautiful wo/men speaking in exotic languages!
